Default Normal Engine Temp Gauge??????

Is it normal for my temp gauge to read 3/4 while driving at high speeds on fwy? I have replaced and tried it all. Everything is functioning properly. Is it a minor problem I am overlooking?

Normal for your car? Could be. Typical? Definitely not!

What year SL is this? List what you've "replaced and tried."

Gotta go now. If you want to check your gauge, find the connector to your coolant temp sensor and unplug it. Place a 220 ohm resistor across the connector and key on your ignition. The gauge should indicate near the 1/2 mark.

3/4 on the highway is definitely not normal for a Saturn, under any circumstances...

Things to check:

1) is the lower air delfector in place? If not, then the rad will not get enough air at highway speeds, and will run hot.

2) are you low on coolant? what is the condition? check that the coolant is at the proper level

3) condition of the Rad? The factory aluminum rad is quite robust, but can leak from the side tanks. If it has been replaced with an aftermarket copper unit, check so see if you have any rotten cooling fins.

4) Check the Thermostat. If all of the above checks out, you may need a new t-stat. These are not easy to check in the car, you should just replace it to be on the safe side

5) COoolant temp sensor (ECTS) they can crack and give bad readings, but usually cause the car to run rich and register low when they fail (opposite of your condition). However, depending on the year of your car, you should replace it no matter what, as early sensors almost all fail, and they are relatively cheap and easy to replace.

Good luck
