GM Looks to Expand AURA Plant
SaturnFans.com December 17, 2005
General Motors is reportedly interested in expanding its Kansas City, Kansas plant to product a new midsize car that will be based on the company's Epsilon architecture. The plant currently builds the Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx. The Saturn AURA will start production at the facility sometime next spring. GM said the expansion could bring an additional 100 jobs to the plant.

The Kansas City Star says that "GM is seeking $146 million in revenue bonds and a five-year tax abatement for a $190 million project that would add about 50,000 square feet to the plant, which employs about 3,000 [workers]." The Associated Press reports that local officials have given initial approval to revenue bonds and tax breaks if GM builds the new midsize there. Jennifer Brown, a GM spokeswoman at Fairfax, told the Kansas City Star that GM "is proposing to spend $190 million to bring in the new product, including the costs of purchasing equipment as well as improvements to the site."

The newspaper says that the Fairfax plant last year "succeeded in getting tax abatements for a new Saturn car that will be built on the same Epsilon platform. GM has invested $203 million in the plant to roll out the mid-size Saturn Aura in the fall of 2006."
Does anyone know if Fairfax will get a C-Flex bodyshop? Or the next advancement Tru-Flex?

Here's hoping. GM needs to get all of their plants on flexible manufacturing systems. Especially with global (as in worldwide) product development.

Considering the long-term investment in the Fairfax plant, I'm inclined to think it may be a serious candidate for Global Epsilon assembly.
