Default CF HOOD

True or False

CF hood gives you the same weight savings a a lightweight battery

500 bucks for a hood is ridiculous...Id rather spend 50 on a battery and gain the extra engine room...just wanted some input homies

Many do it solely for the look of the CF hood. Not to mention the less strain of holding and opening the hood lol.

Eh, the stock hood isn't very heavy. I think it's aluminum. Now the hood on my Eclipse is HEAVY!. It's made of steel. A carbon fiber hood would save a considerable amount of weight on that car. Would I do it? I guess, if I came across one for practically nothing. But then a sweet CF hood probably doesn't belong on a car that's likely not much faster than the old TBI SOHC Sx1.

a sad reality...but oh well.

Actually, i raced a single overhead cammer jammer with a 50 shot (i believe he said it was a 99). He wanted to race me because he hasn't ran into a saturn on the streets yet, and wanted to see what was up with an SL2 vs an automatic SL1 (Remember, with nitrous and an auto set-up, you can just jam on the gas, and squeeze all you want, unlike a manual tranny)

Anyways, we lined up and he counted to three. Took off and in first he kept up pretty well...second i pulled...third i pulled...fourth he stayed steady with me.

He said he's barely broken the 16 second barrier. My car ran 15.3 stock.

SOHC's with nitrous is still a single overhead cam whichever way you look at it.

(my car is a 97 manual sl2 with merely an intake and cf hood. I had a sub box in back and i forget how much gas, but it was pretty early into my week, so it must have been pretty full. I didn't look at his, but would assume the same, or less even. And he said he just got the car, no aftermarket products except the antennea and nitrous from his previous car.

)

once spring hits, in an effort to lighten up the car, i'm going on a diet to lose 15 lbs. that's good for a couple hp...

cf hood = $500
lw battery = $100
diet = FREE

Nope, its steel.

Also, lighter hood = less weight above the front tires = less traction = more tire spin = slower 1/4 mile times. Removing too much weight in the wrong areas will hurt rather than help. Concentrate on lightening up the interior and rear of the car.

Maybe It's just.. biased.. Since I've never owned a DOHC..

But I like the SOHC for me, yup. Better fuel economy, Thats all I need. Chances of me racing a saturn, even a SC with a DOHC... Are not very high. I mean, If I have the chance to.. sure. But im not going to go out of my way to get it.

Now.. The redline.. thats a different story..

Altuitude and temp has a huge effect on 1/4 mile times. My SC2s fastest run was a 17.5. Most times it is 17.7. I live in Albuquerque NM; 5500 feet above sea level.
