2006 ION-3 Sedan
Default My 7th Saturn - 2006 ION 3 manual with performance package

I just picked up my 7th Saturn on Monday. It is a Berry Red 2006 Ion 3 with manual transmission and the performance package.

As usual, the shopping experience was great. Saturn of Rochester, NY gave me a few dollars more on my 2003 Ion than the Kelly Blue Book "excellent" value. The MSRP was a little less than $16,000. I received $750 in down payment assistance and 4.9% financing for 60 months.

It seems quieter than my 2003 Ion 2. I like the new steering wheel. The sport suspension has a nice balance between ride and handling. The 2.4 L engine does seem quicker, but I will be better able to evaluate this after I get it broken in and can do some full throttle acceleration tests.

I bought my 2.4 with stick about 1 month ago. I have about 1500 miles on it. Mileage to me seems better than expected for a car just breaking in. I drive about 90% highway and 10% city. Total average of 1st 4 tanks is 33.5mpg. I used 87 octane. I tried 1 tankfull of 89 octane which appeared to give better performance, however gave me lower mileage than the 87 octane. I probably will try 91 octane to compare.

I had the enhanced radio in my 2003 Ion3, however got the basic radio in the 2006. The 2006 basic is by far better than the 2003 enhaned in my opinion.

I just filled up for the first time. I received 29.3 mpg on my first tank of gas. About 1/3 of this was highway driving; 2/3 was suburban driving.

After another 150 miles I will be able to do some full acceleraton tests. I can hardly wait.

I finally got my first 500 miles on the car so I could try some full throttle runs. The car is definitely fast. According to Car and Driver, the Pontiac Solstice, with the same engine and similar weight, does zero to 60 in 7.2 seconds. According to the seat of my pants, that feels about right.

Acceleraton is not peaky but is smooth throughout the rev range. It reminds me of a Ford Contour with 2.5L V6 and manual transmission that I owned previously.

I think the transmission might be the same as the Solstice's also - at least the final drive ratios match.

Took my 2.4 on its first foray to 100mph late last night

Congratulations! Yeah, didn't they redesign some of the noise deadening components to make the interior quiter in between 2003 and 2006 model years? That's probably why the engine seems quieter. The solstice is essentially a parts bin car, so it probably does have the same gearbox as the Ion+Cobalt 2.4Ls.

Solstice 5sp is Aisin-Warner, ION is Getrag design but built by GM and someone else.
