Default What size socket for oil filter cap?

Hi, I have to purchase a socket for the oil filter cap. What size works best?

Thanks

I believe the owner's manual says a 32mm is the correct size. I use a 1-1/4" combination wrench, which is slightly loose, but works well enough.

A 1-1/4" 6-point socket works very well for me. Using a open end wrench or a 12-point socket has a good possibility of stripping the nut portion of the plastic cover.

Saturns are supposed to be metric so if you have a shallow 32mm that would be preferable to using american sockets.. I didn't have a socket shallow enough to get at it so I just used an adjustable strap wrench to do it.

You'll never find a 1 1/4" socket shallow enough unless you machine one. Try a search for filter caps in the L-Series forums. Somebody there mentioned some company that carried one specifically for an Ecotec. (all ecotecs are a bit different in that area)

In the meantime, do what I do.
Use an adjustable wrench to get it off. Put the cap back on hand tight. Tighten only a 1/8 turn at most. That's more than enough to keep it from leaking. It has a decent o-ring that compresses fairly easy. Mine hasn't leaked in over 15 changes.

I've changed the oil every time on my '03 QC, buy the filters at Saturn Riverside, CA for $4.95 buy the dozen and purchased an AutoZone brand breaker bar 1/2" drive and a 1 1/4" socket for about $21.00. works well, you losen the cap till just before the soket hits the manifold then remove and losen the rest of the way by hand.

actually i bought one at pep boys for about $4 before discount. 'performance tool' brand (generic), there is also a stanley brand in that size.

i use that socket, a flex joint, and a six inch extension with my rachet and never had a problem.

if they're really hard to find elsewhere, this could be a money maker for me.
