Default cooling fan and Engine coolant temperature sensor problems

Having some troubles with my in-laws 2001 SW2. The Cooling Fan does not turn on and the temperature gauge does not read past 1/4.

We've tried replacing the ECTS, twice already, same problem. The fan does come on, when the AC is turned on. It also comes on when the ECTS plug is disconnected from the ECTS itself.

Even after the coolant is boiling the gauge reads 1/4 and the fan is not on.

Could it be the thermostat?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks for the thread. However, the fan does work and I've already reaplced the ects twice. It hasn't solved the problem.

check the wiring to the ects, probably got corroded.

That's what I'm thinking...it might be the increased resistance. I've checked the exposed part of the wiring, but haven't checked the wire loom leading to the ECU.

Thanks.

I thought Saturn fans come on when the needle goes into the red?

When I bought the HomeComing, the dealer I test drove it with parked the car and revved the engine up. He wanted to show me that you cannot overheat a Saturn and sure enough, the fan turned on when it hit the red zone.

I had two saturns, and neither one of them had the fan go on before reaching the red zone, unless the air is on. Funny, but 12 years later, I still get nervous as to when the fan will go on.
