A head up display similar to the one Pontiac offers might be kind of cool. Opinions?

Good idea, but Pontiac dumped the HUD option on the Grand Prix because nobody wanted it. Ditto for the HUD option for the previous-generation Nissan Altima. Nobody wanted it...except for my friend...she has it on her Altima. Don't remember how much shelled out for it though...

Pardon the dumb question, but what's a head up display?

A Head's Up Display is where key information about the vehicles operation (speed, fuel, etc.) is projected onto the windshield near the driver's field of vision. It is based on technology used in jet fighter's so that pilots can dogfight and still maintain knowledge about their plane's flight and weapons systems. In cars, its intended to allow the driver to keep his/her eyes on the road more. I believe Cadillac is even experimenting with a HUD that would include "night vision" technology so the driver can see better in dark and foggy conditions.

Now that would be a cool thing to have! Night vision is probably a few years away (at least for average-priced cars), but that's definitely a technology worth pursuing.

HUD Yeah, us aging boomers can use all the technological help we can get. I'll be 51 next week, but thanks to Y2K and a few other similar death marches, I've been aging in "Programmer Years" (like dog years but dogs are treated better!).

HUD would be nice, but they are a long way off for now. Cady has one (night vision) which works reasonably well, but the problem is that it can't see "around" corners. What I mean by that is, road tracking for night vision/HUD's is a problem, and the information displayed can be confusing pending night/daytime conditions.

And considering the Night Vision option on the Caddy Deville costs a couple thousand dollars (3000 I think?), I doubt it will be making its way into any mid-level cars anytime soon.
