Default thinking about buying a 2002 sl2 w/ 123k miles

hi all,

I have a 18yr old son that has a pos Ford that keeps costing him money... Shoulda gotten a saturn...

Anyway, I saw a 2002 SL2 on sale at a Saturn retailer for 2799 with 123k..

Can anyone tell me if this is a good deal.. I hesitate because of the miles... but, for the time he will be using it - about 6 months till he graduates from High school and leaves for Navy boot camp in july....maybe it isn't so bad...

School is 4 miles away and work is on the way back home from school so he isn't going very far..

Any ideas.

Thanks,

Laura

Default Re: thinking about buying a 2002 sl2 w/ 123k miles

I depends on how well it was maintained. I have been told my SL2 is a 200,000 mile car. Others on this board have taken them to or past 200,000. But, if oil changes were missed, or other regular maintenance, I would pass. I have bought 3 cars from dealerships that were supposed to be ready to go, and were not. I will never buy a used car from a dealer again without having it checked out by my mechanic. Not sure if that is a good price. I am very pleased with my 99 SL2. One thing I like the most is it is relatively easy to work on, and this site provides excellent information for do-it-yourself maintenance and repairs.

Seems like a good price for the year. Maybe to good a price??? If you 2799$ is right it is very low for a car that age, even with those miles.
Perhaps to good to be true. I would get it checked over very well, even at that price.

I think the price is too low to be true. Mileage is not a problem, however if the car went that far, and in a good conditoin, it should not cause you much trouble, except for possible maintenance, like new brakes, tires etc.
BTW Does a dealer offer some kind of warranty?
How are the tires?
Can you get a CARFAX report?
What kind of transmission is on the car?
Does the engine look clean and dry under?
Get a good hard test drive!
