Default Bye Bye Old Friend

Yesterday, around 630 PM, i was going 45 mph when a lady in a 92 Tempo with no lights on made a left turn. I ran into her head on at 45 mph. I couldn't have asked for a better car. It saved my life. Man do i miss it. The engine was pushed back a foot, and the dash collapsed on my friends leg. She has a broken wrist and knee. I walked out. I have bruises all over, burns and a gash on my forehead. My windshield didn't break. The 71 year old lady went to the hospital, all i know is that shes in critical condition. My car is totalled. I don't know if I'm going to drive for a while.

Sorry to hear that. Better/more frequent testing is needed for drivers over the age of 65 IMHO. I do respect and admire the elderly, but when it comes to driving, most of them flat-out SUCK! Hope you're OK.

That's awful, Mik. Glad you are all right and still around to tell the tale.
Just lost my own car through a rear ender a month ago. It's like losing a beloved pet so you have my condolences and best wishes for a quick recovery.

OUCH! I'm glad to hear you're okay and I hope your friend is recovering fine as well. Your accident sounds a lot like mine that I had! Does God have it in for Dark Green S-Series?
I was shook up a little bit after my accident. I can tell you from experience, the best thing to do is just keep on driving! Sure, you'll be a little more cautious from now on, but it wasn't your fault, so try to find some solace in that. Get yourself another Saturn, and trust me, the "love affair" will continue!

thanks guys, I REALLY appreciate it. I haven't called my friend yet, but I'm going over today. I'm not getting another dark green S series, i can tell you that. Its just that a frontal 45 was life shattering almost for me. I'm going to drive tm, so we'll see how i do. most likely, in the next month, i'm going to replace my old pet with a new S. I really love those cars, so maybe i can find a good used 2002 or something. Thank you again, i'm i'll keep in touch

Glad to hear you're alright Kim. Losing your baby like that has to be hard, but it reaffirms your faith in Saturns, doesn't it? Hope you get back out there on the road before too long, and best wishes to your friend for a very speedy recovery.

No.1 your okay. It's important you drive as soon as possible. I'm in the counseling business and it is always best to get back into the saddle as soon as possible. Life is full of ups and downs and we can learn from both. No. 2. Don't just look for one year. Go on something like Autotrader etc. and be patient and specific with what you want. Style, mileage, etc. There are lots of good choices. They tell me white is the safest color on the road.

Oh dear I am so sorry. I'm glad you made it out alright... let's hope everyone does.
Kat pointed out to me a good point. You and I were both talking about getting another car, and ended up getting back into Saturns after an accident. I know this sounds crazy and stupid now, but you might feel safer in your next one. There is something about how well they hold up that inspires confidence in the brand.

Sorry to hear that. I hope your friend is doing good and no buddy starts useing the "Sue" word any time soon, but if they do thats why we have auto insurance.

If there is any thing you need just ask.

Im sure there is a uber nice saturn out there some where with your name on it just waiting for you.

Kim,

PLEASE make sure you get thoroughly checked out by your Doctor!!

When I was a young person, I was in an accident and did not get a COMPLETE checkup. Today, I have back problems that would have been prevented, had I been checked out, more gooder.

That being said, I can't tell you ALL of the stories I have heard about Saturns and how well they hold up in accidents.

My son had two accidents in his former 96 SL2 just to make it more personal. IMO, he should have been seriously injured or killed on his second one when the car flipped at 75 mph. If that had happened, I would not be a Grand Pa today!

Wait until you heal to attempt to get another car.

I would suggest, if you want to stay in an "S" series, a 2001 or 2002 and a SL2/SC2 model.

Some VERY important things when looking at a used car/Saturn.

1) When you find the ONE that you want, DEMAND a CARFAX (if from a Retailer/dealer). Although a CARFAX is NOT perfect, it helps knowing the number of owners and if any accidents where a police report and/or a insurnace claim was filed.

2) GET the VIN Number and have the history of the Saturn pulled. It should help by telling you the Saturn service history of the car. I use them in helping folks who are looking at our USED Saturns.

3) Take a Test drive of the car on roads that you normally drive on. USED cars are ALL different. The course that I use includes FREEWAY, curves, bumps, uneven pavement and railroad tracks.

4) Test the radio/audio equipment BEFORE you drive the car. THEN shut it off. YOU want to hear the car.

5) Heating/Cooling, make sure it works and get the car comfortable. Then turn the fan to a LOW setting. Again, you want to hear the car.

6) Put on the A/C button and test for get up and go. You want to make sure tha car moves forward and NOT backward with the A/C on.

I hope this helps and I'll say a prayer for you and your friend.

Hopefully you can find a nice "new" S series, maybe a twin cam model. Good luck on your search!

First off, good to hear your OK. Second, even tho you loved your car, it can be replaced, you can't. This is just another story that proves Saturns are one of the safest cars out there. Ive seen them hold up much better when responding to Accidents as an EMT than other cars. The same can be said for my father and his poor L200, who accidentally rear-ended someone at 35 mph when an 18 y/o girl stopped short at a green light. The car was totalled, but he didnt have a scratch on him. I'll also keep an eye out for any good S Series up here at Saturn of Smithtown. That being said, best wishes and a speedy recovery for both you and your friend.
