Dizzy Need math help!

I want to measure my gas mileage so I drove my 91 SL2 till the needle got to the E (actually below E because with these gas prices it means enough). Went to the station and topped off the tank which came out to 9.508 gal @205945mi on the odometer. Today, the needle was back at enough and the odo. read 206448. Now, if I'm doing this correctly, 206448-205945=503/9.508=52.9mpg? Cant be.

Fill up again knowing the mileage at the last fill up, then do the math. However, if you mileage is correct, 500+ miles on one tank is excellant. Anyone put a couple of bucks in without you knowing it?

I've heard of good mileage before, but that is crazy. I only see one thing, and that is that you should fill up, make note of mileage, then next time you fill up, divide your miles driven by the amount that you refilled-not the amount that you filled the first time...
But even to get 500 miles in a tank is crazy.

use the trip reset...it's the button stocking outta the gauge. It'll reset it to 000.0 and calculate that way.

You have to fill up to the same point both times. Fill until it clicks off two times in a row. Record the gallons you put in the second time and divide that into the miles you drove.

Is your odometer accurate? If the tires you're running are not the OEM size, there's a chance it's throwing off the calibration of the speedo/odo. You might want to make sure that you actually did drive 503 miles.

The tires are 1956015 on factory alloys. I also reset my odometer during first fillup and wrote down the mileage. I wanted it to be accurate thats why i drove it to almost empty. When I filled up this afternoon, I wrote down the mileage and the odometer was at 503. I do a lot of highway driving, about 40 miles every day averaging about 75 mph. The last time I took down the readings I came up with 55mpg which I cant see happening. Ill try again next week and take an average of the three.

Have you recently installed any special intake vortex turbolators in conjuntion with twin-electrode spark plugs? Maybe a quart of Prolong in the sump combined with Lucas mystery oil in the fuel? All of the above? According to independent tests, the combined fuel economy increase of the above modifications would match your observed increase over stock pretty closely

You wouldn't use the 9.508 that you originally put in. You want to start once the tank is full then use that mileage based on the amount of gas you put in after having driven it. The easiest way:

Fill tank and reset trip meter.

Drive until the gauge is on E.

Fill tank again and divide the miles on the trip meter by the number of gallons you put in.

Wait, and you drove most of those miles at 75??? YOur mileage efficiency would have been decreased because of that fact as well...I wanna hear the end of this story.

As a side note. It is not good to run your car down to E all the time. The fuel pump is actually cooled by the gas in the tank (sounds kind of strange doesn't it). By running the tank down, the pump gets hotter and shortens the life of the pump.

There is a difference between running down to "E" on the dash gauge before refilling (when there's still reserve fuel in the tank) and running the system until you run out of fuel and stall (bone dry).

Is the Saturn fuel pump a submerged pump design?
