I've got a 1998 SL1, manual transmission, with 108K miles on it. I have noticed that it is starting to lose acceleration on the low end. What will happen is that the car will really struggle to get past the 2K RPM mark, especially in the higher gears. It feels almost as if the car is being slowed down by a parachute or something. However, the maximum speed is not affected in any way. It just takes a while to get there. I just went on a road trip through the mountains where this was bothersome, although the problem started before this.
Many times, once the car gets past the 2K RPM barrier, it will "turn it on" around 2,500 RPM. That lead me to this thread, which sounds almost exactly the same as my issue. I haven't checked the EGR valve or anything yet, though. I keep meticulous records of gas consumption, and this loss of acceleration hasn't affected mileage at all (my trip was mostly freeway, and I always averaged over 40 MPG). Air filter is almost new. I just replaced the PCV valve, though I highly doubt this has anything to do with it. Any thoughts? TIA!

Welcome. Yes, you can pull and clean your egr, check the how to or search the tech forum. I guess your not getting codes?

Nope, I'm not getting any Check Engine codes. Also, something I forgot to add before, I am sure that it is not the clutch that is slipping. I have a manual so I will take a look at the EGR.

Does it misfire down low? Or it just has no grunt?
BTW have you replaced the fuel filter?

It doesn't misfire at all. It runs smooth, just not much acceleration.
I have though about the fuel filter, but I haven't changed it.

It's pass due for the fuel filter. Go to your dealer to get one, yes, it cost about $100.

Well if it only has probs in that rpm range so I don't think the f/f is the culprit. You may need to change it but it's not an emergency as I see it.

This is a bit out of left field, but my car did the same thing when the alternator died. It took forever to get up to speed. Do you ever have problems starting it or do your lights dim when you hit the brakes? Just throwing out another option for you...
