Default 96 SL2, Used Oil Analysis, Mobil1 15w-50, 3200 miles

96 Saturn DOHC 109,592 total miles

Miles on sample: 3268
Oil used: Mobil1 15w-50
Makeup oil added: none
Filter: SuperTech 3614
LC (lube control) used, initial dose of 4.5oz after about 1700 miles, then 1 oz at about 2700 miles.
Air Filter: changed from STP mid OCI to Fram model

Changed out early due to fuel dilution concerns: artificially increased insoluables creating premature oil breakdown. I'm thinking the old STP air filter was too clogged to let sufficient airflow in.

NVH with this oil is reduced tremendously! MPG was between 34-36MPG...what I normally see with thinner oils. I hope the fuel dilution issue is behind me as I'd like to use Mobil1 for much longer runs. 10K would be nice.

Previous runs: 7400 miles with M1 5w-30, 1700 miles with Chevron Delo 15w-40/10w-30 mix.

Why did you choose such a heavy oil?

I tried this oil last year and was very happy the way it held up. It reduced NVH far more than any other oil I've tried, including Chevron Delo 400 15w-40. Kendall 10w-30 was the worst in this engine for NVH. In fact, it was so bad, I changed it at only 600 miles as I couldn't stand the rear-view mirror vibrating all the time!

The Mobil 1 "can" originally came with a 30,000 mi. recommended oil change interval when it first was marketed. Other synthetics had that same 30,000 mi. recommended interval until someone probably sued one of the oil companies...
The recommendation was for you to change the oil filter at the recommended milage, but the oil wasn't required to be drained until 30,000 miles....
Just a little info. on synthetics....

I'd love to go long drain intervals, but I don't think Saturns DOHC is made for it. Seems like it beats up oil far too quickly. My target is 10K with M1 and Lube Control. Probably longer if I can control the fuel dilution issue.

Plus, I'm finding shavings on the bottom of the oil pan when it's drained. That's not confidence inspiring, you know? Not nearly as many shavings and weird crud as my 99 Toyota Sienna 3.0L V6 had...it was as problematic in the sludge department as they come....but enough to be of concern. OTOH, maybe that's just usual engine wear? Don't know. 111K and it runs great!

I'm hoping that it was the air filter being too clogged. That will keep the cost down and avoid a trip to the dealer.

I have M1, Amsoil and Catrol GC...the German Castro...the green elixer of love and life in my oil shrine. LOL This Saturn gets treated very well. So well, that I think this Saturn will far outlast me wanting to keep it!

Now, if I can only find a good aftermarket CD/MP3 player that has execllent AM & FM reception.... hmmm.

whoa. why are you using 15w-50 in your Saturn? a 30,000 mile oil change in a Saturn 1.9L would include replacing the engine! there wouldn't be any oil left in the pan at that point. unless of course you topped off the oil on occassion.

Well, Saturns CAN go 30K between changes...you'll need to change that filter a few times though! I found this while browsing the internet some time ago...

ok so say you change the filter every 3000 miles, which would require you to add the 1/2 quart of oil that was in the filter. after doing that 10 times you'd in effect cycle out/in 5 quarts of oil in those 30,000 miles.

Well, the filter needs to be changed between 10K - 12K as per Amsoil or M1. So 3 times on a good filter a so-called "full-flow" type.

I'd say you're thru the "break-in" phase
now on to another 300,000 miles of Saturn motoring......

(On a more serious note you might try the Mobil 0W40 "Mercedes spec" oil this winter for better cold cranking. Also most of the NVH problems I've seen in S-Sats are engine mount wear out - and the OEM parts seem to work a lot better than the Chinese ones)

An uncle of mine...who happens to be a plumber...uses Mobil 1 in his work trucks (after the first drain and filter change with about 1000 mi. on a new truck...screw the warranty!) claims he only changes the filter! His trucks are Ford 150s with the 300c.i. six cyl. and he easily goes 200k on his engines. He overloads the trucks badly (i.e. steel racks, vices, pipe threaders, etc>) that the engines must be under constant strain. Seems to work for him!...

HomeBase,

Keep in mind that AMSOIL 0W-30 is not a regular oil. This oil is built and warranted by AMSOIL for a 1 year or 35,000 mile drain interval -- or longer with oil analysis. Oil filters have to be changed on schedule -- OEM quality filters at OEM requirements (usually 6 months or 7500 miles), AMSOIL super duty oil filters at 6 months or 12,500 miles.

I've got about 50,000 miles on my VW diesel with this oil, with oil analysis every 6 months. I ran Valvoline Premium blue Extreme (a synth blend), mobil 1, and castrol syntec before switching to AMSOIL. My engine wear came down over 40% when I switched from the Castrol 5w40 to AMSOIL 5W-30 diesel oil (this oil uses the same formula as the 0W-30 and is guaranteed for the same service intervals in gas engine use).

Andy

Super interesting post.

I also use the mobil 1 15w-50 in the summer. It is great. I also have 200k and an audible knock at startup so it is way better than a rebuild. It runs great and keeps my knock at bay.

I understand using the amsoil or mobil or whatever for 30,000 to 50k but doesn't the cost of these oil tests every six months out weigh the cost of changing your oil?

Nice to see others aren't afraid of using more robust oils in their crankcase! I think M1 15w-50 is arguably the best readily available OTC oil. It's hard to find Amsoil, and is often cost prohibitive...as are RedLine oils. Currently, I'm using Shell's Rotella T 5w-40 Group III synth. It's a good oil as well. The MPG s are down slightly, but not terrible. Makes the engine very smooth--NVH is lessened substantially, much like M1 15w-50.

I do agree that performing frequent analysis adds to the cost and makes it more difficult to justify the expense. But, it's a cheap hobby and I can't golf nor play any sports since I screwed up my back. LOL If and when I go to sell the car, I can ask more since I have statistical proof that all is well inside the engine, too.

Is it Okay to post links to other auto-based websites here? I have a couple newer analysis of this car and my VUE over at BITOG. I'll post the links to those if it doesn't go against any forum rules...
