Default ezpass

Does anyone use the turnpike ezpass system with an internal mounted transponder? They sent me an front license plate mounted one which will be stolen the first time I park my car at the lot. Plus I would have to mount a front plate bracket.

No. I do not think the state of MA (Mass Pike) offers that version yet. I have the window mounted transponder.

They sent me the license plate mounted EZPass. I was told that there was something in the 03 VUE windshield that may interfere with the signal of the window mounted one. But it looks like that is not the case. I was worried about it getting stolen too...but so far so good.

I have a 2003 VUE and drive over the Tappan Zee Bridge every work day works fine. No problems using in NJ or the NYC bridges or Port Authority bridges

I have the external expass. I got it because of the metal in the glass issue. Which it seems is not an issue after all. When I use it, it is with a front plate holder and cover and I have no problems fitting it (just a small gap on the top). I use security (hex) bolts on my plate holders and have had no problems with it in NYC or around home. I don't think most people would even know what it was.

Does anybody have any photos of this license plate version? I'll be ordering a new EZ-Pass soon and want to know what the external one looks like.

Thanks for all of the replies. I should have taking a photograph of the external transponder before I mailed it back to the state. But it is a black box about 2 inches tall by 7 inches wide and about 1 inches thick. It mounts on a steel plate that is angled up so that it get a good signal from the system. Overall it is not a "clean" installation at all.

You can see my Vue in the gallery and the only idea that I had was to mount it on the push bar, but that would look like crap.

Thanks again for all the replies.

get some sort of locking nut, or use lock-tight, but i don't think i would want to torch the bumper to get it off

I have mine mounted on the inside, up into the black dotted area on the windshield. Above the compass display.
I only had one problem, when I went thru the ezpass at the NJ turnpike right outside NYC, the compass went wacky, it kept changing even as I was driving strait.
So I pulled over in the next mall I saw, and did some donuts and recalibrated it. Ever since then it has been ok, and I have gone thru that tollbooth numerous times.
So why did I tell the story? I don't know, just for the heck of it I guess
