Default SL2 Reving up

Hello -

I have a 2001 Saturn SL 2 - Stick Shift - that has the following problem: The engine revs up, sometimes, when the car is placed in neutral or when shifting.

Some examples:

1. I am driving down the highway and as I shift and I am pressing the clutch I will (sometimes) see the engine revs go UP rather than down.

2. This is also noticable when I park my car and place it in neutral before stopping the engine. The car will rev us up to 2K or more for 10 to 60 secods before going down to 900 revs which is its normal.

I had the TPS looked at by the dealer and they claim it is ok. The dealer hs not been able to find the problem. Any help is much apprecited.

Best

Marco

could be idle air control valve, map sensor a number of computer sensors. could be as simple as a vaccumm leak somewhere. Had same type problem on my s-10 and it was a vaccumm problem.

Are you sure you're taking your foot off the gas before you hit the clutch? If you leave your foot on the gas and engage the clutch, then yes, the RPM's will go up (its essentially like revving in neutral).

Also, depending on the temperature, it's normal for the car to rev high when it starts. I also have an '01 SL2 5-speed and especially when it's cold out, it'll jump up to 1.5 or 2k for up to a minute.

I have had that happen with every single saturn I have owned. On my 4th, and just noticed it revving on its own this week. Know exactly what you're talking about. parked, no feet on any gas or clutch or anything and revving at 1.5 rpms. also, taking foot off the gas (how do you keep one foot on 2 pedals John01SL2) and on the clutch and revs instead of drops.

I'm confused with your response... I have two feet, one for the clutch and one for the gas?

Try replacing the ects sensor. Seems to be the most common problem with these cars. Mine has gone thru 2 so far before 80k. The symptoms you describe were identical to mine. If is is the ects sensor that has gone bad, it is sending conflicting signals to the computer in the car. It may say the coolant is cold when it is hot or the reverse. This causes the car to react like you describe. Eventually your gas mileage will suffer and the ses light will come on because other systems in the car will be affected. read wolfman's post on how to do the job. Not difficult and cheap.
