Default Dura-lube or Slick 50

My Ls-1 has about 15700 miles on its 4 cyl engine,at the next oil change I was thinking about an oil additive but which one is better, Duralube or Slick 50.IF anyone else has used these any suggestions would be appreciated

I am not sure, but I don't believe that Saturn recommends additional additives for the regularly scheduled oil change. I have a 2001 L100 and don't plan on using anything other than regular dino oil. I have changed the oil twice since I've owned the car. It now has 9500 miles on it.

I am a little confused as to what type of oil is the best. Currently it has valvoline 5/30. I may switch to 10W30 for the summertime. I prefer Kendall for that purpose. I have heard varying stories about the effects of switching to 10W30 on these motors, but nothing conclusive. I believe that the 10W30 is more resistant to heat buildup, but the Saturn cooling system seems to be pretty good, so it might not be a problem in this car as it has been in past vehicles. Therefore, I may stick with the 5/30 into the spring and early summer and see how it does.

The Kendall oil has been good for my other vehicles, however, experiences vary as do cars, so I don't know. I think in the case of additives, I haven't heard of any harm, however, whether do are any good, who knows?

Save your money. Don't use either. i used slick 50 on my mazda. didn't see any diference. also here some food for thought. Slick50 uses teflon. du pont makes teflon and advises not to use teflon in combustion engines. JMHO!
don't use either. i think a better decision is stick with dino oil or go to synthetic. now there's a good debate lol.

No! Never, ever, ever put any of that stuff in your engine. If you really want to protect it use a full synthetic oil such as Mobil One. Teflon in those additives exists as a solid particle, not a liquid. Solid particles get trapped by the oil filter and plug it up. They also clog the tiny holes that oil is designed to flow through..such as the ones that lube the timing chain. And you sure don't want that going dry. The bottom line is the only things going into your engine should be gas, oil, and coolant (among various other essential fluids).

I agree with the rest. . . neither. I don't know about Duralube, but Slick 50 has teflon in it. Teflon creats "non-stick" surfaces by coating peices, not float around suspended in oil.

Pro-long has gained some popularity over the last few years with their infomercial barrage. Pro-long uses chorinated parrifins as a lubricant. Yeah, chorine and wax, that's something I want in my engine. Speaking of which, I belive Pennsoil contains parrifins as well.

One additive I do care for is Z-max. Z-max contains linkite. I don't know much about linkite other than it was developed for use in aircraft. I tried the stuff in my Grand Prix last spring before a trip to California. Usually when I make that trip I'd get between 26 and 28 mpg. Most of the way, I was getting 33-36 mpg. During the return trip, I set the cruise well over the speed limit and got 39mpg going through the state of Nebraska. I was pretty amazed.

Slick 50 had to pay numerous rebates as part of a class action fraud settlement.

If you're on warranty, you probably should not use anything other than a properly rated oil. Mobil I is a great choice if you want extra protection, but you still need to follow Saturn's change intervals.

Don't use any of the motor oil additives. They are a waste of money and they might be doing more harm than good to the engine. The US Federal Trade Commission slammed all of the motor oil additive companies repeatedly for fraud - go to their Internet site, do a search, and see for yourself.

The best thing for your engine is to change the motor oil and motor oil filter regularly. The next best thing is to use Mobil-1 fully synthetic motor oil. Lastly, try to stick with the motor oil weight recommended by the manufacturer unless you live in the artic circle or drive your car in the Sahara.

You may want to check out the article at the link below. It is a good piece, and has several references to studies done with additives.

Slick 50 a few year's ago was taken to Court & judged that it's advertising claim's were false so Slick 50 had to pay back a lot of Customer's.Duralube was also in the same situation. Take the Money You are going to pay for the "Snake Oil" and go to Walmart & buy Yourself 4 quart's of "Mobile One" Your Engine will thanyou!!!!

NEWSFLASH........from the 1 March,2001 issue of The Caveat Emptor Times

The P.T.Barnum Petroleum Corporation has just announced that they have now completed testing of their new oil additive at 7 different independent testing laboratories and have received glowing reports from 8 of them to the effect that the product will allow motorists to skip two out of every three oil changes for the first 80K miles.Unfortunately the company said that they could not reveal the names of the test facilities or copies of the test data for "proprietary reasons" but that several of them did testing for major players in the industry.

When asked what the significance was of the 80K mileage figure, the company representative said that there were a few minor technical side affects past that figure but that they could give no further details for "proprietary reasons" at this time.

( On advice of my lawyer, this is to state that this is a humourous item with any reference to an existing company or product being coincidental and not intentional)

synthetic

Change your oil every 3000 miles, always use synthetic. It will extend the life of your engine.

Skip the additives...go for straight synthetic...Mobil 1 or Amsoil ( if you can find anyone who sells it)

Ditto on synthetics. Over 325,000 on a 4-cyl. 1.8l J2000 was
proof enough for me... . Never had a oil related problem since
I've used sythetics.
