Default rumor mill- opel sportscar coming to Saturn?

The Britsh automotive press has had a few articles recently about the new Opel two seat sportscar possibly coming to the US as a Pontiac or Saturn. This is a major league piece of work- built by Lotus for Opel on the all aluminium Elise chassis. The only real differences between it and the Elise (which is unavailable in the US) is the substitution of the 2.2 LS1 (called the EcoTech in Europe by GM) engine for the British Rover 1.8 and different plastic body panels to change the appearance. Any insiders hear anything?

It would make sense. Its about time the big three woke up and smelt the cup of joe. All i see are z-3's, miatas, s2000's, mr2spider's, boxsters. Whats going on here? "But the fiero made no profit", build it right this time and it will.

Default Turning the Rumor Mill

I have been keeping a VERY close eye on the Opel sportster and Opel Astra lately. They both feature the GM L850/L61 engine and have Excellent potential to get performance parts made for them. Weighing only 1700 lbs, the sportster would need some major re-engineering to be sold in america. I have to say if anyone was going to do it, it should be Saturn though. It's probably GM's best answer to the S2000, Z3, and MR2 Spider and can only be affectivly sold as a Saturn. Why do I say that? Because Honda/Acura and Toyota are both trying to re-market themselves as "friendly" retailers. If GM throws it at Pontiac, it will be sold in the same oldschool fashion that every other POS GM car is, and destroy the cars image and intended purpose.
Latest rumor from Saturn is that they discussed it and decided not to sell it in the USA. It would cost too much to make it - street-able. I think Saturn needs to adopt Britney Spears "oops! I did it again" song for there theme.

Have you seen the specs for the Speedster?
L850 2.2L ECOTEC engine
150 HP @4200 rpm
150 TQ @1900 rpm
GVW 1700lbs
0-60 5.8 seconds
1302 in ~14.0 seconds

Ya, I wish they would bring that here. Then We'd have all the HP goodies we ever wanted.

I've been following the Opel Speedster for a while and had hopes that it might make it as a Saturn.

Unfortunately, the rumors and reports that I saw at first seemed to indicate that if it were to come to the US, it would likely be a Pontiac. And then it was decided, probably by GM and not Saturn, that it would be too costly or difficult to federalize it, so any appearance in the US became mostly a dead rumor.

Unless these new rumors really are new, I don't think we in the US will be seeing any Speedsters.

I saw it recently in some magazine and I think it said that the Opel Speedster can't even be had with air conditioning, all in an effort to keep the weight down. Don't know if this would fly in the US.

I still advocate Saturn someday doing a pure image car like the Speedster. But I think they have their hands full for a few years at least.

OK, it's no speedster, but...

I once saw a convertible 1st generation SC. That definitely looked fun to drive. Add a reinforced roll cage (for safety), redesign the panels a bit, and throw the L-100 engine in it, and it'll really be sweet.

Saturn, you love redesigning those panels. Do it, and you can have a roadster with reduced R&D costs (I think). I have no doubt we can beat Miata's safety rating.

Wei,
Not a bad idea. I have been a long advocate of attempting to re-use the shorter wheelbase SC structure, even though I waited until it was stretched to get my SC1. There are certainly those that preferred the shorter coupes.

IMHO, the killer thing would be to rapidly develop a small coupe (3 seater) that is either a convertible at least a targa. Make it quickly, inexpensive, and ultra-safe for its size and sell it both as a upscale "mid-life crisis placebo" and as an entry car that teens and their parents can agree on.

Use of "old" engineering might make it easier to develop, but unfortunately, Saturn is too conservatively prudent and would be reluctant to try a rapid-development project, IMHO.

But just as with the SUV, 4-door truck, and minivan, Saturn has to branch into additional
markets, and do it quickly and inexpensively. Using older SC stuff or the newer Opel
Speedster stuff would make sense to me.

As economical and brilliant as that is, you hafta imagine the reviews coming from places like Edmunds and CR. They could care less if the old platform was great. All they hear is, "It's old", so it has to be a bad car. Automatically, without even driving the car, they'll bash it.

A world ridden of injustice....

Bad idea a convertible S series coupe- another front wheel drive floppy, junk convertible hairdressers car. It'd be another Capri. We're talking here about yhe Opel speedster a midengined, all aluminium chassis state of the art two seater that is built on the chassis of a car, the Lotus Elise that'll run rings around roadsters like the MR2 and Z3.

Can this still happen? Saturn needs to work on its image and this would certainly help.

I sure would like to see this. I don't know how many of you remember the Opel GT when it was here back in the late 60's early 70's. The body was styled by Pininfarina(yes the people who do Ferrari's bodywork), and it was a cool little car. My parents had one. Some people called it the "poor man's corvette". It had some of the same lines the vette had, but was smaller. I would like to see if they could bring that one back like VW did the beetle, Ford did the T-bird
