Default Problems with Saturn Return

I am a very happy owner of a '93SC1. I'm only 17 and it's my first car. I've wanted a Saturn since they first came out. My brother recently decided to invest in one himself. He bought a 2000 SL1. Now everybody is aware of the 30 day full refund return policy, right? Well.. here's what happened. My brother got arrested and asked me to return the car for him. I bring the car back to an unhappy sales man. (Saturn of West Broward, Florida) He gave me the forms which needed to be signed by my brother. Two days later he calls me up telling me he doesn't believe that my brother is in jail. He told me that my brother put 900 miles on his car in 17 days, that he thinks my brother bought it to go on vacation. I'm a little pissed.. this man calls me up to tell me I'm a liar. I'm just confused about something. I thought Saturn dealers were supposed to have the most friendly sales men? When I finally got the signature and brought it in.. he started lecturing me about the 900 miles. I may be 17, but I should not be lectured by a sales person at a Saturn dealership for something I didn't even do. And get this.... they had already re-sold his car before I gave him the paper work. Is that right? I'm just a little upset. I was saving up for a new 3 door.. I'm not so sure anymore if I want to own another Saturn.

I am sorry they gave you a hard time (maybe BECAUSE you are young) but it sounds like it was a bad sales consultant. I expect that they will be long gone by the time that you are ready to buy a new Saturn, but if that is sooner rather than later, then you should probably check out other Saturn retailers in your area.

There are several sales consultants who post here often and they seem to be exceptional people (bright, hard working, and very honest!). I hope that you will put this bad experience behind you. It was good of you to help your brother out, obvoiusly he needs it. Good luck to you both!

There are jerks every where. Dont let it bug you. If you want to get even get your car elsewhere then bring the receipt to the manager of that pinhead and tell him thanks to the way you where treated you took your business elsewhere.

I would suspect you were given a hard time because of your age and your brother not being there also. I wouldn't expect that to happen and wouldn't condone it however I urge you to not cut off your nose to spite your face either. Your plan to save for a 3-door is a sound one. Don't transfer your anger from the dealer where it belongs to the cars or the company as a whole. That will serve nothing except to deny you a great car. I'm sure there are other retailers within a reasonable distance of West Broward who would welcome the chance to assist you. Also, while it doesn't excuse it or make it right, don't forget to look at the other side too. The sales associate is only paid on sales that stay sold. Additionally, any bonus for making over a certain number of units or making one of the top 3 places for the month are affected. Economically this could have been a fairly hard hit, perhaps as much as $500 or so. That doesn't in any way excuse poor treatment but perhaps explains it a little better. Personally, I think the Saturn return policy is far more liberal than it needs to be but then that's part of what makes Saturn Saturn. Good luck with your 3door when you get it.

You can try Saturn of Ft. Lauderdale. It's owned by the same guy, but it's a larger dealership and their service is pretty good. Well, good enough to buy two Saturns in a row. Good luck to you and yours.

SpikyChicky,

IMO you can't blame the Sales Consultant for taking a questioning mode. First, unless you have something that gives you the RIGHT to return the car (is it also in your name), they really can not accept the return, IMO. Think of it this way, you and your brother may have had a argument. He decides to get away for a few days. THEN you take his car to return it.

Did you provide the Retailer with something, indicating that your brother is in jail? Also it seems that your brother would have to sign and have a notary witness the signature, IMO.

The situation is unique and this may have caused the actions and reactions from the Sales Consultant. IT does NOT excuse him from calling you a liar, though.

I don't know how the Retailer could resell the car? The papers have not been signed. These from what I have seen are legal papers.

I would contact the Sales Manager at the Retailer and talk to him/her. Explain what happened and what you opinion of the situation is.

As far as Saturn and the return policy, Saturn does compensate the Retailers for returned cars under the program. Now the Retailer can decide to NOT compenste the Ssales Consultant for the initial sale and that is decided by franchise. The Saels Consultant may have had a large amount of returns and may have a problem with his boss.

The return policy is set by Saturn to make it VERY easy to return a car. All they want is a reason. BUT like everything, if a Retailer has HUGE returns IMO, then Saturn would take a closer look at the situation.

Al

p.s. You may want to tell the Sales Manager about your future buying decision. They may offer something to regain your confidence.

Good Luck and let us know what happens!
Al

Ditto everything about just moving to another retailer.

900 miles in 17 days, that's about 52miles a day. That's less than my average commute (Northern VA). Besides, I could think of nicer cars to vacation in (a loaded L-300/LW-300). <img src="http://64.77.2.166/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/Images/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">

But to be honest, isn't your brother glad he bought a Saturn? Had it been a Ford, he'd potentially be stuck with exploding tires AND would not be able to return the car at all.

hey spiky chiky! were neighbors(well im moving out of west broward), being somewhat of an expert on both broward county jail and saturn of west broward heres my thoughts
one, the salesman easily could have called broward jail and just given your partners name and they confirm instantly if said operson is in custody (dont ask...ok, sigh, in between my employees and me once every 5 years knocking someones teeth out we got triple a bail bonds on speed dial!, by the way, anthony at triple a is a close personal freind of mine, anything i can help with?)
second, i pulled a major account from saturn of west broward when my company was first taking off, when i do repairs i use strictly new saturn factory parts, they were so inexperienced my girlfreind melissa would have to spell everything out for them, their delivery sucked, and half the times it was the wrong part.
to me this is one more step towards solidifying the fact that their idiots, number one dont matter your age, sex, whatever, you deserve the same respect as a 40 year old middle aged man walking in, two, so what the poor guy got arrested, been there, **** happens, sounds like they had no respect for him either.
good luck, if you ever need anything were right across alligator alley now, in lehigh acres, i still live here and even after i move i gotta come over to the auction like once a week so id be glad to deliver a part if you needed it.
also try and get in touch with the florida spoc group, a little whacked but a great bucnh of local saturn enthusiasts like ourselves.

by the way, where do you live? were currently in parkland but only for another 30 days or so... i had enough of broward!
