Mad 07 Vue won't start

Hello. I have a '07 Vue that won't start. It will crank & crank but not fire. When cranking, there is a rattling in the engine. There's no water in the oil nor oil in the water & no fluids leaking. The check engine light is on but the code is for the emissions/catalytic converter which, sad to say, a hole has been punched into it. We've had intermittent problems with it starting off & on over the last 6 months or so. When stopped at a stop light occasionally it will surge as if the accelerator has been pushed with the brake on & it has been idling rough for a while. Any thoughts on what it could be? I thought the engine could've went south hence the oil/water part & the rattling but I'm starting to think it's the C.P.S. Anyone have the same problem or know what it could be?

4 cyl, auto, 2 wheel drive & milage is around 230-240,000ish I believe. I apologize, I'm not near it to be specific.

If security is flashing, Passlock disabled injector operation to prevent theft. If security isn't flashing, troubleshooting proceeds in a different path.

This may as simple as worn out spark plugs since many vehicles are using plugs rated for 100k miles. Some keeping their vehicles may forget to replace plugs at 100k mile intervals.

With security not flashing during starting, two issues can be checked. Fuel and spark. If spark plugs were never replaced or in doubt, remove them to check several things at once. Several failed starting attempts usually floods the engine so plugs should be wreaking of fuel. If plugs are visibly worn, check their gaps. Your owner's manual or sites like rockauto selling plugs often lists plug gaps that are basically plug n' play without gapping. Other Vue members can post gap values. If fuel isn't smelled on plugs, a fuel issue may be the problem. Checking for spark can be done in one of two ways.

Spark can be checked visually but plugs must be removed, reconnected to the ignition coil pack and wiring, plug bases wired to engine block (providing ground). Someone turns the ignition switch to START while you observe for spark on all plugs. If you choose to perform this spark test, remove the fuel pump fuse or relay to prevent injectors from dumping more fuel into the engine. Replace fuse or relay after spark testing. An alternative spark test requires starting fluid sprayed into the throttle body (plugs replaced and ignition system connected). Supplying fuel (starting fluid) ensures fuel is being drawn in and presuming spark is generated, the engine should fire up for a brief moment. The engine not firing up suggests a faulty ignition system (ignition coil pack or ignition control module).
