Wrench 2009 Saturn Vue Liftgate Won't Open

I searched around on this forum (and the Internet in general) but did not run across any information that I was able to follow.

In a nutshell, the liftgate of my 2009 Saturn Vue no longer opens. It worked fine a couple months ago, then it started "going out" in that it wouldn't unlock when we pressed the button (either on the key fob or the driver door). We could smack the gate a few times and then it'd work but the effectiveness of this (if it was effective at all) diminished over time. Now it just doesn't work at all.

I checked the button with a multimeter and it saw that it was working.

I replaced the actuator for the gate with a new one and that did nothing.

I looked at the fuses that seemed related and they appeared to be in good shape.

The gate does not "click" when unlocking or locking the doors.

Just had a mechanic take a look at it and while they had it hooked up to the computer they couldn't get the door to unlock by sending commands directly that way either.

Their recommendation was to take it to a dealer, but did not give me much hope in getting it resolved since the parts for it are apparently hard to come by.

Has anyone else here ran across this issue and was able to get it resolved? If so, what are some things I can take a look at?

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Jonathan

Similar situation for an '04 Vue liftgate and immediate solution; http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=156882.

Replacing the actuator leaves wiring or body control module fault. If you manage to open the liftgate thru the access hole, you should be able to test the connections for power when activating the liftgate. This should either result in 12v power, intermittent power (loose/broken terminal or wire break somewhere) or nothing (permanent wire break or bcm fault).

Check the REAR CLOSURE 10A fuse in the I/P fuse panel if you haven't already done so. If it is blown, you may have a short in the power circuit going to the liftgate actuator.

If hitting the liftgate seemed to help before it failed altogether, you probably have a bad/corroded connection or broken wire somewhere in the liftgate. I'd check both connectors for corrosion, and if they look good, pull back the wiring boot at the top of the liftgate and check for broken wires.

The liftgate doesn't lock like the other doors, so not hearing a click in the liftgate when you lock the doors is normal. When the doors are locked, the BCM simply disables the liftgate release switch so the liftgate can't be opened from outside the vehicle.

Unplug the release switch, and test the wires in the plug going to it coming from the vehicle. Perform a resistance test on the black wire to ground. It should have near zero resistance. Make sure the doors are unlocked, then check the dark green wire in the same plug for DC voltage. You should get a reading around 5 volts or 12 volts. I'm actually not sure which, but if you get a reading near either one the release switch circuit is good.

If the release switch circuit tests good, then check the wires at the plug going to the liftgate lock actuator. The black wire at terminal #3 is the ground for the lock actuator. Perform a resistance test to ground on this black wire and you should see near zero resistance. The light blue wire at terminal # 1 should receive 12 volts when the liftgate switch is pressed (make sure the doors are unlocked when performing this test). If you don't get any power going to the light blue wire, then that is where the problem is and you'll need to troubleshoot further.
