Default Saturn is denied the credit it deserves yet again...

This is a review of the new Mazda RX-8 as found on Edmunds.com...

Quote:
The RX-8 is what Mazda calls a "four-passenger sports car." While the 2+2 sports car idea has been around for a while, Mazda has certainly come up with an intriguing if not unique idea for the RX-8's cabin. Technically there are four doors, but the rearmost doors open "suicide" style for easy entry and exit. Mazda calls these doors "Freestyle" doors. The addition of two normal doors would require a B-pillar which would make the car longer and heavier and stray too far from the sports car ideal it was aiming for.
The whole article can be found here

Not once in that review does it mention Saturn and its Quad Coupe as being the first manufacturer to use this concept in a production car.

Let's do the math...

Rear doors on trucks for who knows or cares how long.
1999: Saturn introduces the RAD on the SC.
2004: Saturn Ion QC with four doors, two opening suicide style.
2004.5: Mazda, god of all creation, steals idea and calls it "freestyle", thereby earning adoration from all. I hope the Redline makes more power than that thing. Take it to the cleaners, with its over-rated engine.

I like the Wankel, I honestly do, but how stupid is it to call the thing Renesis? Sounds like a rat's name.

The 197HP version is kind of low on torque, too. Only a hundred sixty something lb-ft. This is with an automatic. I'm not sure what the six-speed manual edition makes. Yeah, I won't be trading my GTP in for one of these any time soon...

One of the bad things about rotary engines.... No torque. It's almost as bad as the S2000, with its 240 HP and 153 lb.-ft. of torque. At least Honda bumped up displacement. Now they're at a whopping 163.

I guess I don't expect any better accuracy from edmunds than I do from Consumer Reports.

Gotta love it-That's how it's been ever since the RX-8 came out. "Oh wow....4 door coupe..that's so unique"....but when Saturn came out with the 3 door coupe it was odd...............
Gotta love Saturn not getting credit..yet again....

Polymer on a Saturn is "Cheap with huge panel gaps," but on other cars it is "weight reduction, dent resistant."

Unpainted body panels on a Saturn is "Cheap and cost cutting," but on a Honda it is "Quirky and cute."

Center IP on an Ion is "Awkward and annoying," but on a Toyota or Mini Cooper it is "Distinctive and stands out from the crowd."

I could go on and on...

Come to think of it, Mazda wasn't even the first to offer a rotary engine, NSU,(later absorbed by Audi/VW) was, although Mazda "perfected" it.

Yes, and as I recall the old Mazda rotary engine cars were oil loving gas guzzlers.

I had an acquaintance several years ago who owned an early 90's RX-7. He was, for the most party, happy with the car. However it went through THREE ENGINES before the warranty ran out. The original broke, the second leaked oil but the third seemed okay.

At probably $5k a pop Mazda sure took a bath on that sale.

Not to mention the fact that you could do all you cooking on the hood of the car once the engine started running. The heat those things produced was crazy.
I remember i went for a ride in a late 80's model and my feet were a little on the warm side pressed up against the fire wall.

Saturn never gets much in the way of recognition due to the fact that for some odd reason people in the media don't see as being anything different or unique. Which is odd because it really is.

I wish the would stop reviewing the same BMW/Merc/Ford/whatever models every year, which only have minor trim option changes and review something different.

Saturn. Different kind of company. Different kind of car.

Yes a very high power rotissarie!
It bet its the only rotissarie that can do 0-60.

But seriously the RX-8 is not that great of a car. It looks nice but its not the rabid sports car the early 90's RX-7's were. Of course I still wouldn't dare drag one.

Why spend all that $$$ on a Mazda rotary when you can buy:

for only $158.90?
