2008 Astra XR

![]() Hi! I recently acquired a 2008 Astra XR 5 door from my sister. It is in great condition with only 103,000 mostly highway miles on it. This is a great little car!
Anyway, I just changed the oil to full synthetic 5w-30 and used a WIX 57674 filter. I noticed that the old filter had a felt-like ring attached to the bottom of the filter surrounding the center hole. The new WIX filter lacks this. Being felt-like, it didn’t seem like it could have any sealing purpose so I didn’t think much about it. This is the first car I’ve owned that uses a cartridge style filter and I was wondering if anyone knows what the purpose of this felt ring was and wether or not it made any difference. I’ve already learned a great deal about my Astra from reading through these forums and want to thank you all!

![]() The felt acts as a gasket to prevent oil from bypassing the filter. The Wix filter has a gasket molded into the end of using felt, so you are OK.
