Default Intermittent Problem (Of Course)

So I've got a bit of an issue with my '01 manual SL. When I go to start the car up, 9/10 times it will go right away. The other 1/10 of the times, it cranks normally but just WONT catch. You could sit there holding the key in the "start" position and it'll keep cranking strong. To fix this issue, I have the stop cranking, wait a sec, and try again and ALWAYS on the second time it starts up right away. Today, when I tried to crank the second time I got this scrapey/grindy noise like the one you get when you crank a car when it's already running. Not sure where to go with this. Flywheel maybe?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

On my '98 I find my starts are always good if I turn the key to run and let the fuel pump cycle. Pressure must be leaking back through the return. Otherwise I have a similar issue, especially if it has sat overnight or at work all day. The '99 has no issue like that though.

Did you glance at the tachometer, maybe it was already running quietly?

Sometimes just holding the key to ON for 2 seconds, you will ensure the pump has PRIMED, and then turn to START. Maybe, your fuel filter is clogging, OR the pump is starting to fail.
