Default Battery Covers

Hello all,
As winter approaches, I decided to install an OEM plastic battery cover on my 1995 Sl2. I remember when I bought my 1994 last year, it came with a cover. But my 1995 doesnt have one, so I bought one from a 1992 SL1.

Anyway, does this cover really make a difference in holding heat in for the winter or keeping heat out for the summer? Or is it just another snake oil thing...

Let me know if I should keep or toss this cover.

Neither of mine do. I can't imagine it does anything useful.

Yes. All S-Series Cars had a Battery Cover. The Plastic Cover was designed to keep the battery in place, along with the Battery "Tie Down" (The Bar, that is held in with the small 10MM Bolts.)

Here is one for sale on Ebay (First Gen). But in all honesty- they really don't do anything specific for the Battery functioning. In other words- save your money. You really just need the battery tie down.

Interesting - my '99 that I have had since new never had one, unless I removed it and forgot. Not my style to do that though.

The cover served the purpose of stabilizing battery temperature. This is more of a theoretical exercise than useful fact. Best to not use one as it also traps acid leakage if there is any.

Extreme heat can shorten the life of a battery over time. If you're in a southern state that has hot summers, it can help getting a thermal wrap around the battery. I've noticed that batteries in the trunk (whether that's the OEM location or relocated) last much longer than a battery under the hood - usually by several years.

That is a radiant energy deflector with a hint of thermal insulation. 10mm of an Aspen Arerogel insulation could be effective but it costs about $20.00/sq ft. and it is somewhat obnoxious to handle and in this case custom install.

I left it on since it is already there. It looks like it has been cut, so it only has two mounting points, missing the third one right behind the fuse box. Still holds tight, so its staying.

In the Ion forums, members there have their original batteries last long after their new car warranty expired, up to ten years of life. Factory trunk mount.

The '95 I still drive was purchased new and had no plastic cover. It does have a foam type wrap that I still have on the replacement battery.

As for either helping battery life, in theory it might. But the replacement battery in the SL1 is the only replacement battery ever put in the car.
