Default @008 Vue Greenline Broken Hood Release Cable - HELP !

I pulled on the release latch and felt a pop. The latch flipped all of the way out and the cable followed. It appears that the opposite end of the cable pulled out of the latch mechanism under the hood. The cable can now slide back and forth about an inch. Pulling on the cable with pliers has no effect.

I need to get under the hood and I need to ask if there is a way to open it without destroying the grill to get to the latch mechanism. If I look through the grill, I can see three bolt heads. One in the middle at the bottom of the mechanism that is slightly accessible through the grill. And two up higher on either side that are inaccessible through the grill. I imagine that these hold the mechanism to the frame.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get the hood open?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with 2008 Vue so have no first hand knowledge.

However, a common hood release fail point for many vehicles is hood release handle under dash and following illustration might help locate.

PS ... just reread your complete post and realize my attachment is no help. I'll locate and post replacement instructions for under hood mechanism.

Here are a few more pdf extracts ... complications are hood must be open to remove sight shield and headlight.

Someone has surely had this problem before - in fact you can google 2008 Vue hood cable broken and find a few ideas.

This is last file of this mess ... pdf cable replacement instructions were too large to attach to above post so here they are jpg.

Cable routing might not be clear in first view so its expanded in second view.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your reference material.

The hood release cable is definitely broken at the mechanism under the hood
and not at the dash board lever. After looking at photos of replacement cables,
it seems that the crimped-on ball at the very tip of the cable probably broke
off.

The question I have is, how do I get access to the mechanism? It looks like
the grill will need to be cut off. I'd really hate to do that.

GM didn't do an FMEA on this vehicle for sure.

I was able to open the hood with minimal damage to the grill.
I have included a photo of the "modification" to the grill.

I used a 7/8" hole saw to open access holes through the plastic grill
next to the Saturn logo. If you jam the saw in at an angle into the corner
you can start the hole, and then straighten it out once it catches. Then
go straight in toward the bolt head. There are a couple of layers of plastic
that sandwich a thin piece of sheet metal. You need to go through all layers.
Use a hole saw that is bigger than the diameter of your 10mm socket. Also,
using a flexible extension and six point sockets are preferred because it is
very difficult to get the hole perfectly in line with the bolt.

Once you free the mechanism, you can lift the hood a few inches, That is
barely enough to disconnect the "hood closed" sensor wire. The you need
to muscle the hood up until you can get a pliers around to the inside and
pop the release bar. The the hood will open completely and you can fix
the mechanism.

In my case, the crimped-on ball was not in the slot on the release bar,
and the plastic "cable housing end retaining tip" (don't know the accurate
term) was broken off. Therefore, when the release lever under the hood
was flipped, the "retaining tip" probably broke off allowing the housing to
fall and the ball to come out of the slot. Bottom line, non-functional.

This fiasco took the better part of 4 hours to complete. Including a trip to
Home Depot to get the flexible extension. For now, I have installed a loop
of strong nylon cord around the release bar that I can grab through the
grill and open the hood. I will save the cable replacement job for another
day. At least I can open the hood again.

Nice job! I remember when I had my 03 Vue, the cable end under the hood was too long, and would not activate the latch. It was still under warranty at the time so I had the dealer fix it. They got the hood opened, and then put zip ties after the crimped end to take out the slack and it worked fine the rest of the time I had it.

It's GOOD to have a spare!

Termite ... I happened upon steps in FSM the dealer may have used to release the hood latch. I suspect most mechanically inclined owners could use steps to release a Vue hood.

Items needed:

Vue antenna
Protective tape
Vue with hood open to locate area to insert antenna.

These procedures were probably developed by a highly compensated GM engineer circa 2004.

The additional claim information (page 5 and 6) is interesting as GM suggests using a defective antenna but they will supply a free antenna which dealers need to hang-on to for future use.
