These are the compression numbers on a 97 SL2. I am suspecting blown head gasket between 2 and 3

-no oil in coolant
-no coolant in oil

Could this be a simple matter of pop the head off, slap a new gasket, and call it a day or does anyone think this is a deeper problem? Oldnuc?

I wouldn't bother unless you at least have the mating surface machined at your local machine shop.

Been here, done this, got the tee shirt

Depends on how long it has run with a leak between the cylinders. This is a clean up and measure task to see if just a gasket will fix it or not. You measure this with a straight edge and a bright light, see light and you have a problem. You are concerned with both the head and block. This could also be valves so Without having the head off you have no idea exactly what is wrong.

First step will be pulling the thing, hope to do it soon.

Thank you, I forgot that burning valves is a thing. I am not the one driving the car so I don't know how it's being driven...

When I get it apart I shall post what I find

Gonna be a replacement head. It's difficult to properly restore a warped head and it's better off the avoid any potential issues that come up from improper restoration by just sourcing another non-blown head gasket head.
