Default Saturn Wont Start

Whats up guys. Hope someone can help me with this. I have a Saturn SL2 2001 with 80k miles on it.

Recently it stopped starting (wont even crank, does nothing) all lights are on, battery is new, everything works. She was running fine and still does when i manage to start it. The way i have gotten it to start is what confuses me the most (doesn't take much to confuse me tbh, as you'll soon see. Im a noob). i was told it might be a starter problem so i googled what the starter was and what it looked like and a lot of people said i could sometimes try to bump the starter while trying to turn it on and it might start. So i hit what looked like the top of the starter and turned the ignition and BAM! she started right away. Turns out though I've been hitting the egr valve and its worked every time till now. I should mention every time i got it to start using the method above it would start no problem 3 or 4 times in a row after drives then i would have to give the egr a good knock to get it to start again.

Now she wont start no matter what i try. I've even replaced the egr valve with a new one. let me back up a bit. even when i replaced the old egr valve i would still have to give it a knock to start it. After a day or 2 of starting it like that with new valve NOW she wont start at all. Ive google my ass off about egr systems and their function in a vehicle which is why I'm more confused now than ever as to why a hardish tap on the egr valve would get it to start.

Ive cleaned out the pathways, Ive replaced the valve, I checked for codes and the only one that comes up is p0401. BTW I did all of my screw'n around after she stopped starting indefinitely.

One more note... I'm pretty low on gas so I'm going to try getting some gas into it when my girl gets back from school and hopefully that's the reason it wont start now. I'll update after i get back.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I originally posted this to General threads but i think it belongs here instead. Apologies if there is a way i can just move my post rather than re-posting.

The starter motor will always be hot with 12 volts .

The solenoid may have quit .When you turn the key the solenoid should have 12 volts from the ignition when ur cranking. Get a DIGITAL VOLT MULTIMETER AND SEE IF U HAVE 12 VOLTS ON THE SOLENOID WHILE CRANKING If you do then your solenoid is out and u need a new starter. If there is no 12 volts at the solenoid then Id start looking at my fuses.

So when u turn your key solenoids gets a 12 volts cause your key is like a switch from the battery to the solenoid . When your not getting 12 volts to solenoid at crank then its either a ign switch or a fuse. If u do get 12 volts at solenoid then its the solenoid issue. Get a dvom and start looking for the 12 volts.

Another thing check to see if your headlights work good sign to see if battery connections are working. If they work they battery is connected ok to fuse box. If they dont come on Id look at fuses for lights and wiggle battery connections while you keep the headlight switch on and wiggle the battery connections till they light up bright then you know your problem is a battery connection issue.

yes, often necessary to tighten the battery cable connections a couple of times after installing new battery... the cable ends have to 'seat' in the soft lead of the battery sideposts.

^ I've never had issues with battery cables connecting to replacement batteries in my L300. If I'm not mistaken, GM uses side terminal cables with metal points around the inside of connectors so they can bite into leaded side terminal batteries to make mechanical and electrical connections as secure as possible. The small bolts, 5/16 or 8mm heads, means to me they shouldn't be over tightened at all due to the shallow depth of bolt holes. As a rule of thumb, I try to use a three finger approach to tightening side terminals. Just enough torque to bottom the bolts and no more. Stripping threads on side terminal batteries is easier when 'gorillas' over tighten small bolts. They're small for a reason.
