Default 1997 SW2 find

I scored this little gem over the weekend off of craigslist. I got it for cheap because it isn't running but I'm almost positive that it is the ECT sensor. I haven't had much time to look at it but I couldn't pass it up for the price. The guy was getting ready to scrap it and it only has 137k miles on it. I picked it up for $300 so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

It will just crank and chug a little but wont start. I haven't had much time to look at anything other than that. I will let you know what I find on it but here are some pics for now.

Looks like the plug wires are correctly pairs off (esp 1 & 4) so that's probably not contributing to the chugging, no start.

I did see some stuff on that. I was going to hook a fuel pressure gauge to it and see if it is dropping off. I do hear the pump priming but when I pushed the schrader valve after it primes it just dribbles out. I'm assuming it has that issue but figured it should start if it's priming and has pressure up to that point. I will be trying to spend a little more time with it in the next few days. I've only had about a half hour with it doing some preliminary checks.

True, but I have a 99 SC2 with a seized engine that might change all that. The slush boxes aren't all that bad once you work the few quirks out of them. I also think autos are easier to sell because everyone knows how to drive them. If I decide to flip this one the auto will stay.

Agreed the auto is a selling point for about 70% of drivers.

A lot of folks looking for Saturns are looking for manual trans, though.

If you decide to flip it, you can advertise as "auto transmission, but give me a couple of weeks and $x00, and I'll convert to manual trans for you"

So a little update. I replaced the ECTS and I got the car started. I'll attach a few pictures of the failed sensor. Anyway, because of this sensor being bad the previous owner allowed the car to overheat. That being said, I was getting some bubbles and exhaust gasses coming out from the coolant reservoir and a little bit of a milkshake on the engine oil dipstick.

I did a cold compression test and I got the following. #1-110psi #2-70psi #3-60psi and #4-120psi. So, I ordered up an upper engine gasket kit, heat bolts, timing cover gasket set, and a thermostat. I have my hopes up that it is just the head gasket and not a cracked head but time will tell.

It should be a fairly easy and straight forward job as I have done plenty of engine rebuilds, but if anyone has a few pointers specific to this car, or any specialty tools needed, I would greatly appreciate the input.

In regards to your PSI readings, they are extremely low- they should be at 180-190 across all 4 cylinders- Ideally at 185 PSI on 4 cylinders. You may have some more internal things to look at as well in regards to getting this car running good. Also- what is the condition of the Plugs, Wires, Coil Packs, Ignition Control Module?

I would consider swapping these out as well. If you have some extra money, you would be looking at roughly about $200 for those parts all together.

Although, those Compression numbers are really low.

I had a 97 SW2 that I bought from Member Ftruscot; It was a solid car; but I do know that we had to replace the Fuel Pump; which is a bit of a Pain; because the Fuel Pump and Filter on that car are on top of the Fuel Tank. You will have to drop the Tank in order to get to it. I had to have my local repair shop do it, years ago- because I don't have a lift, and I was trying to replace it in the middle of winter...and didn't have all of the tools to do it. When the Fuel Pump went bad, the whole cabin REEKED of Gas....

I certainly hope that you get the car running good.

I know that they are all pretty low. We will see how it looks when I get it apart. Plugs and wires are all new. Coils and ignition control module seem ok. The car ran surprisingly well once I got it running aside from the exhaust in the coolant and coolant in the oil.

I think the fuel pump should be replaced because as soon as the pump stops running my psi goes from 42 straight to 0. I know that's a common issue for this year with the fuel valve.

That's how I pulled it out. I'm assuming that the heat did that to it. It looks like it started to expand out of the brass fitting. It looks like the ring area right above the brass is where it was seated initially and just worked its way out with the heat.

I bought a junkyard engine once - that had sat for a while.

I bench tested. 75 psi all four.

After some griping to the seller, I played with it - as he insisted it ran great.

...

Long story short - my SO drives it every day. It uses no oil - and now tests about 200 psi on all 4.

Frozen rings is my guess.

Thanks for the link to your thread Waiex191.

I'm hoping its just the rings from sitting for a couple of months. I was told it wasn't using much oil but you know how that goes with previous owners. I will try to do some treatments on it to free up the rings but I don't plan on ripping in to the lower half of the engine.

Who knows, I might get this one done and enjoy driving it more than the SC1 and end up keeping it. Time will tell. Fun little project though.
