2000 L-Series 3.0L Wagon
Default 2000 LW2 3.0l Expansion Tank

I am replacing the expansion tank on my 2000 LW2 3.01 wagon. I got an expansion tank off of what I thought was the same wagon but it seems the engine was a 2.2l. Will the expansion tank still work? The one off the 3.0 engine has 3 ports, 2 at the top and one at the bottom. The tank for off of the 2.2l engine has 2 ports one at top one at bottom. I have attached the diagram of both engines.

No.

A careful examination of both diagrams provided is clear enough. The third port on the tank is absolutely necessary for the V6's cooling system, but it's not for that of the 2.2L engine. Find a tank from any L-Series car with a V6 from '00 to '05 whether it's a station wagon or a sedan, they're identical.

Surprisingly, new tanks are still available for your car as of this date (if you must get one)!

See if the 2.2 tank has the nipple. It just may need to be opened so it can be used. The tanks are same otherwise.

If the mounting/bracketing of the tank is identical between for each engine then it would be possible to utilize the the recovery tank for a V6 with a four cylinder engine by merely capping of the third port/nipple. However, it cannot work the other way around. The 2.2L engine's recovery tank has no third port/nipple. In the OEM catalog the part numbers differ for each engine.

(BTW, a radiator suitable for a V6 can be used with a 2.2L engine by capping off the upper nipple at the radiator's driver side tank. That is how my replacement radiator came. The irritating thing about that is the need to replace the cap every two years because they don't last as long as the hoses. Since the OE radiator had no extra port/nipple there was no concern of a leak at that spot. This past Summer I learned that this now would have to be dealt with as a maintenance item. )

Do you know what the third hose is for on the V6? If I can cap it off I would like to. The sensor on the 3.0 tank fell apart and would like to use the tank for the 2.2.

In the pictures, the one not connected is the one that goes to the radiator.

It is part of the system to help get air out of the radiator. You must use it or your cooling system will not work correctly. They used that hose from the radiator to the tank because it is needed.

I'm not familiar with the purpose of the other hose is which connects to the radiator. I would not recommend bypassing that hose as it's clear that the engineers determined it was needed. I am loathe to make changes in the cooling system without knowing how something is supposed to function. Perhaps an examination of FSM could answer the question, but I won't see it until I get home from work.
