Default Poor Radio Reception

Hello all, I've done some research but still looking for some more guidance on the poor radio reception in my 2002 Saturn SC. I purchased the car with an aftermarket Sony Xplod radio installed. I took the radio out and all connections are correct, including a tight antenna plug connection. This is the first vehicle I've had that hasn't required an antenna adapter. I've also inspected the notorious passenger side footwell connection and taped it together. Could it just be the stereo itself? Any other likely ideas? Thanks for all the help in advance!

Quick check - unplug the antenna from the stereo - and stick a couple feet of wire into the center connector where antenna plugs in. If this improves signal strength - the problem is a faulty antenna. If not - the culprit is the stereo.
