2006 ION Red Line
Default Rear Cupholders

Hey, just in case anyone was wondering, the rear seat cupholder found on some ION's simply snaps out!
I was fiddling around trying to figure out how the cupholder was attached and how I might remove it, and I eventually used enough force and ended up pulling it right out.
It still snaps back into place, but at least now I can remove it when I want to (I've had middle rear seat passengers complain in a full car load).

I was too chicken to get it off. Does it snap out towards the back of the car or do you pull it from bottom of the car towards the roof?

I've had 3 adults in the back and they asked if I could take out the cupholders and I said I didn't think they came out. Ooops...

I kinda want to get the rear cupholders for my ION1, but don't really have the money or need to justify the expenditure.

From the photo, looks like this only works for the coupe, with back buckets seats?

Nope, the Ion3 sedan has rear cupholders as well and I bet it is the same part.

For the most part, it snaps out towards the back of the car.
What I do is push down in the middle of the cupholders right behind the centre console with my thumbs, and pull back at the same time; you may have to lift them up at the back somewhat because they hit the wall of the rear seats before they come out (the clip that holds the cupholders in is quite large) - just follow the contour of the seat wall as you need to. I hope this helps.

I've actually been pleasantly surprised at the number of bits and panels that do just snap out. Nice plastic (sorry) that seems tough enough not to break!

Thats very good to hear. I was hauling 3 passengers in the back a while back, and the poor person in the middle had to straddle the cup holders. I felt kinda bad about it. Now I know it just snaps in and out, I'll have to try it out and see....
