Default Loud Clanking Noise Left Side Engine

I have a video to show the noise the car is making. 95 sl1, manual

Notice it when the car is at idle and under a load or if the rpms dip
It makes this noise constantly when the ac is on at idle.

Sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine. I know i replaced the tensioner in 2016
New Timing chain last year

Otherwise it drives smooth.

IS the sound just coming from the AC clutch while it is engaged?

I don't have access to sound here at work, so will view later at home, but it is presumed that when you say LEFT side of engine, you are referring to the passenger side when viewed while filming, not drivers side, correct?

It appears to shake a lot at idle, even tho you say it drives smooth, correct?

The sound can be heard when the ac is off mainly when something is adding load to the idling engine such as extra electrical load, however its pretty constant when the ac is on. The ac is on in the video.

Yes, passenger side, sorry.

Yes it drives smoothly but it is shaking a lot at idle. I believe all of the mounts have been replaced.

Disable each cylinder, one-at-a-time, by disconnecting the electrical cable to an injector; see if this can be pinned-down to a specific cylinder. Have you pulled the plugs to inspect them and take compression? Those basic checks may give some clues. Noises are notoriously hard to diagnose, especially from "long distance", but that sounds rather serious to me. Checking oil pressure with a gauge would be a good idea, too. Are you intent on saving this engine?

Disabling cylinder 1 makes no difference (engine runs just as bad). Attached a pic of the plug.

Runs pretty smooth with one cylinder down, but at idle it sounds like crap.

Compression test is next on my list, not sure when i will get to it.

Clarify: Did you disable every cylinder one-by-one, or only one of them?

I disabled all of them one by one however cylinder one was the only one that didn't stumble the engine.

I wouldn't bother with anything else until the compression test results are in.

ok so #2,#3,#4 are all sitting around 170 and #1 is at 60. If i add some oil to #1 it jumps up to 120 for a round of testing then goes right back down to 60.

That is a classic bad ring/piston/cylinder symptom.

Ya, that's what i was thinking. Given the noise i imagine that cylinder is a mess. I guess i'll just swap out the engine (and peripherals). The junkyard up the road has like 4 96's. No 95's though.

The '96 blocks are Aluminum, otherwise close.

Umm... all of the blocks are aluminum. The '96s will go easily into a '95.

Only until a certain someone chimes in with his arm chair engineering degree and 0 knowledge beyond what the various GM posted interchange guides say.

'96-'98 heads will require a 2nd ECTS port drilled into the upper radiator hose outlet ($15 ish if you don't have the required 1/8" NPT tape and drill bit on hand), knock sensor plug may have changed (swap sensors...) and I believe everything else is good to go. Don't throw out the old engine & sensors until the 'new' one is in and working fine.

'99-'02 will be close to more work than most people want to do for a swap to '93-'98 but can also be made to work. If it's going into a '93-'98...your best bet is any '93-'98 engine. '91-'92 have fubar crankshafts rendering the blocks mostly incompatible with '93+ while '91 has a fubar engine mounting system.
