Default Air conditioner shuts off randomly

08 Aura XE
3.5L
106k mi

it tends to shut off its A/C when idling, it turns back on a few seconds later. It does not have automatic temperature controls and I have no idea what's going on. any ideas?

I'm not 100% familiar with Aura ac so you'll have to help with some questions. I don't know if Auras cycle ac compressors as older r12 systems did. Vues have a temperature sensor added to the txv by the firewall to detect too cold (freezing) temps to ensure icing doesn't occur by cycling off compressor operation. If your Aura doesn't have a temperature sensor on the txv then the compressor may run continuously as most Saturns do. If this is the way yours runs, continuously, then one reason for compressor cycling may be loss of refrigerant, a leak. Once enough refrigerant is released from a leak, a pressure sensor detects lower operating pressures and sends a signal to the ecm. The ecm disables compressor operation to prevent damage but as soon as compressor operation is halted, pressures rises and the sensor detects this too, sending this info to the ecm. The ecm then enables compressor operation until pressures drop from abnormal operation due to loss of refrigerant.

The least expensive diy troubleshooting method and avoiding throwing away money on refill kits is buying and using a uv blacklight to search for dye installed in every Saturn model. There’s no need to refill or add dye, just use a uv light to search for dye. It glows brightly under shade, in a garage or at night. Dye leaks out only when wear and tear occurs. Refrigerant is invisible. Oil leaks out too, staining the leak area along with dye as tell tale indicators. If you get this far and find the source of a leak, you can determine which way to proceed, diy all or partial repairs or leave it to a repair shop.
