Default 3.5 Vue with conflicting codes

I'm puzzled with 2 codes our 04 Vue threw today. I am not sure if they were thrown at the same time but they both came today.

P0446 and P0455

How can it be holding pressure too long and detecting a large leak?

A sticking vent solenoid?
A faulty tank pressure sensor?

If not close to state emissions inspection, you can try resetting these error codes and see if one or both return. In the meantime the two links (below) may help.

Here are the two error codes as described in technical details;

DTC P0446 - https://www.obd-codes.com/p0446

DTC P0455 - https://www.obd-codes.com/p0455

The vent valve is usually the one mounted near the fuel fill pipe, hiding behind the quarter panel. A separate evap line goes to this vent valve to allow tank venting while filling the tank. Its powered with 12v to close along with the purge valve opening to allow the engine to suck vapors collected in the charcoal canister for recycling into the engine intake. Vent valves, tank fuel pressure (and vacuum) sensor and evap purge valve are usually reliable and last the life of a vehicle unless damage occurs from crash incidents. The fuel tank pressure/vacuum sensor only measures one or two psi and vacuum less than 15in hg for the evap system. If there's anything that can trigger one or both error codes, possibly indicating more than one problem, it may be severely corroded metal lines used in the evap system. One line may be the vent line to the vent valve running next to the fuel filler pipe. An examination of the fuel fill and vent pipe may reveal the extent, if any, of severe corrosion allowing metal pipes to erode, opening the line to outside air. When eroded, the evap system cannot seal to test tank pressure and vacuum resulting in error codes. Rubber hoses, damaged plastic fittings, are also considered in finding the cause of these errors. Testing solenoid valves are simple and described in both links.

Thanks, I read the FSM deff. on setting P0446 wrong. I read it as it sets the code if Vacuum is held longer then set amount of time. It now makes sense.

Question is this now.

How reliable are NAPA caps? that i think is the problem. On Tuesday she could not put gas in it because the cap just spun and did not come off. I go a new one at NAPA because its way out of the gas cap warranty from GM.

And the codes came on on Wednesday.

Aftermarket gas caps must meet OEM specs to work. Check for compatibility otherwise shop for a GM cap (online if local stores don't have one). Your local GM dealer may have one too.
