Default FYI: Rusting suspension spring & a question

Anyone know that a coil spring for the suspension can rust thru and break? I did not.

My wife was driving home from work Wed when she said she heard a popping noise and another and the saw smoke. She was only on a residential road so she pulled over and the passenger front tire was flat.

Turns out part of the spring broke off, slid down the strut, dug into the back side of the tire, shredded it which is why it was flat and then damaged the strut after the tire caught the spring. Wild!

Also, where is the best place to research TSBs?

Yes, it's somewhat uncommon, but I do see it enough in the salt belt. Usually the strut is worn out long before the spring rusts away, but sometimes owners will try to reuse the spring on a new strut to save money. If you can keep the rust at bay on the spring using POR15 or the like, they're pretty much good forever. Otherwise, I've had good luck with Moog strut assembles - they're a little under $100 on rockauto.

You can search TSB's here - https://icsw.nhtsa.gov/cars/problems/
