Default EGR valve problems

This my third sl series, and have had EGR's go out in every one of them probly twice. Why do these motors go through them so much? I buy the Delphi oem ones

Electronic, Linear EGRs can fail, much like any other component on a vehicle.

There are a few contributing factors:
Heat(exhaust gases start at a temperature of almost 1,400F)
Excessive Oil Consumption(which causes excessive carbon deposits in the EGR system)
Mechanical/Electrical defects(eventually, anything can wear out.)

May I suggest that you try cleaning the EGRs, like in this video:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bt5lRTt6BsU

Cleaning the EGR can restore its functionality and reduce the costs of constantly having to replace them.

What type EGR valve, vacuum or electric? How are they failing and what are the symptoms? Many of us have little-to-no problems with the EGR valve, there must be something else contributing to you having to change them so much.

I have a 2000 sl1 with the electric EGR valve. Any suggestions on what could be making it go bad?

Again, what are the symptoms that it has failed; won't pass smog, code set, rough running, etc? What changes (for the better, I assume) when you replace the EGR valve? Do you have live-data available?

Do you recall what code numbers? My understanding is everything is OK now, and you probably no longer have any of the failed ones on hand; correct? We probably can't help any until it fails again. And, look into getting live-data. I think an ELM327 link is the cheapest option. That will help in trouble-shooting the next time this occurs (or most any other engine/trans problem).

Do you know a good GM software app for ELM 327 that does more than a basic code reader? The Ford software has good reviews, but I haven't found anything really for GM.

You could do an EGR block to nail down if the codes are do to the position sensing or flow, or if the rough idle is in fact due to the EGR.

Our from the factory EGR bit it after a cleaning or two. The new EGR has been on much longer and never had any issues. On our car the EGR would quickly go from a lumpy rough idle to "no chance this thing will idle" fairly quickly.

what part number is it? are you sure its oem?
I've had nothing but trouble with the aftermarket egr valves, they last a year then start to throw codes.

You may also want to get a Clean Screen gasket as well. They help with carbon build up.

I'll ask again...

Is everything OK now, or are there presently code/roughness issues? If there are codes, what are they? Are you going to look into getting live-data?

^ ^ ^ I have no idea what is going on in this thread
I think OP has an EGR problem but does not want to clean it, looks like OP wants a different make of EGR, maybe?

Ever cleaned out the EGR tube from the exhaust?

I drove my '98 SL2 daily for about 8 years/100k miles with no EGR issues, but I cleaned it about 4~5 times over the years, and it has a filtered gasket.

My '02 has been daily driven for about 5 months, cleaned the EGR when I got it and put in a filtered screen.

Yeah, my experience (with three DOHC) is that the electric EGR lasts "forever"... without cleaning. No filter, either I suppose. Mine are gen1, though

Billr I pulled the pcm fuse about three weeks ago, and the ses has not came back on.. It idles rough but runs fine after giving it throttle. the code that was on there before I pulled the fuse said a low voltage signal to the EGR. Ive checked all the wiring and it is all sealed up and looking good. I put new plugs and wires on and cleaned the throttle body at the same time I pulled the pcm fuse, and still runs the same, so im thinking it has to be the EGR

Try blocking the EGR ports, let's verify the EGR is causing the rough running. While you have the EGR off, take a picture of the pintle end and the ports on the head; let us see how cruddy that stuff is. I'm thinking you have an intermittent electrical problem here. Very hard to find sometimes, and you probably will need some form of "live-data", maybe even more sophisticated than the normal live-data from the OBD port.

I (and others?) still urge you to try blocking the EGR ports to see if that helps the roughness. It is pretty easy to do, and can give some good clues.
