2005 VUE 2.2L
Default 05 Vue won't start, no check engine light after hitting deer

Hi y'all

It all started after my husband hit a deer, destroying the cooling fan and radiator, as well as the a/c condenser. He drove it to work while stopping to refill the coolant tank and so it wouldn't overheat. Later that day he drove it home stopping along the way to let it cool down and kept refilling it with water. When he got outside of town he stopped to let it cool down and it stopped being able to start. He replaced the radiator and now its rolling over but won't start. The fuel pressure gauge jumped to 58psi then a second later dropped to below 50psi holding at about 46psi. He checked the fuses and they were fine. There's no check engine light.

Any help would be appreciated.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Welcome to SaturnFans, Youbettermakeup! It will help everyone to know which engine is in your VUE.

You can make this easier on yourself if you return to the User CP>go to Edit Your Details>scroll down to Primary Saturn Model Year and Primary Saturn Model Type and fill in that information. It will appear beneath your login name each time you post a message and be there for all to refer to. It helps to reduce unnecessary questions and possible confusion.

1) What does the oil look like? Does it appear normal on the dipstick?
From NAPA: "Coolant-contaminated oil takes on a frothy consistency; itís like finding a latte under your oil cap or in the valve covers." Refer to the link below.

2) Presence of spark needs to be verified. If that is good then,
3) a compression test should come next.
4) Was there any wiring damaged in this accident?

1. The oil looks normal.
2. There is spark!
3. How would a compression test be done? We can't afford to have a mechanic do one right now
4. It looks like there might be some but my husband is going to look into that tomorrow.

And I edited my profile to reflect that!

Check for fuel on spark plugs - several starting attempts should have very wet plugs to indicate injector operation. No wet, fuel smelling spark plugs would suggest zero injector operation. One fuse powers injectors. If plugs are soaked in fuel, the engine may have flooded. Dry off wet plugs, crank the engine a few seconds without plugs to blow out excess fuel, replace plugs and try starting again.

1) Conceivable that filling it with cold water could crack the head or block.
2) Some cars you have to bleed the system when adding water or else there is air in the system and temperature won't register properly. Could have blown the head gasket.

I did almost this exact same thing with my old VW Fox when it got a pinhole leak in one of the radiator hoses. Blew the head. You could tell from the oil that coolant had gotten into it though.

Follow fdryer's suggestions first. If it starts and runs normally then you can dismiss the compression test for the time being. Should the test be necessary, however, you will need to borrow a compression gauge from one of the national chain auto parts stores which have a tool loan program - O'Reilly's, Autozone, or Advance. Follow instructions which should be included with the tool regarding its use. It's not difficult but may require a second person to assist if a remote starting switch is not being used.
