Default Random issues today

I don't know if it is coincidence or not but weather was crappy (snow, sleet, rain) and my car was acting up driving home from work today. First, it wouldn't start. Took me 4-5 attempts. once i got it started, and drove in traffic for 5 minutes, the idle would jump way up to 3k rpm and hold there and then drop back down and this continued for my entire drive and at random which was a pain in the ass. when I had to put it in first or second and let the clutch out, it would accelerate a bit too much and then i was hitting my brakes and constantly putting it in neutral while watching the revs stick and hold at 3k for upwards of 30 seconds at times.

Another random issue I saw, which is probably unrelated, was my temperature gauge kept dropping to below Cold like it was losing the signal. Then it would jump back up to normal, then back down, sometimes jump back up half way, then back down. very random.. probably need to look for corrosion on the wire to the ects sensor

check engine light has been on for the egr valve but haven't checked lately to see if there are any other codes.

Check for vacuum leak, like a hose off, or spray brake cleaner nearby the valve cover gasket area and see if idle spikes or not.

Check the connector and read the codes. You may have more than the EGR code now, and it may help to confirm the problem.

As mentioned by toggenburg, you will want to check for a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. The 3rd gen SOHC had problems with the intake manifold gasket. I believe it was usually around cylinder 1 and would often throw a misfire code.

You might also want to clean the throttle body, paying particular attention to the IAC.

Use the scanner to check TPS % in Live Data as well. Plan on buying an intake gasket kit, as every single last 3rd Gen SOHC seems to have problems with the gasket shrinking, which will cause a P0301 misfire code.

Check the coolant sensor before anything else, as it has a huge effect on the air/fuel mixture. Make sure there is no corrosion in the connector.
