2002 SL2
Default Modern Day Automatic Transmission

I now have 45K on my first automatic transmission (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manumatic) car (2013 Mazda 3). You can hardly notice when it shifts gears. The only time I would definitely notice it would be when it downshifted from 2nd to 1st. With time, this has been improved (broken in?). Automatic transmissions improve with age or maybe only during 'middle age'?

I don't know where you got those numbers from, but they aren't accurate. The bias is clearly evident. I don't have the 'turbo' model - I have the better MPG model and average about 36, combined (even in Houston traffic). I've gone on road trips and get well over 40 on the highway.

I owned both vehicles (have you?) and I can confirm that the Mazda gets better MPG (under the same driving conditions) DESPITE it weighing 600 lbs more.

Was straight from Mpgbuddy.com

However, redoing it by .gov readings as:

2002SL2 mpg------2013 Mazda3 5-door mpg 2013 Mazda3 4-door mpg
City 25------------- City 28-----------------------City 28
Hwy 36------------- Hwy 37---------------------- Hwy 39
Overall 29---------- Overall 31------------------- Overall 32

So, perhaps you are getting great mileage AND a smooth shifting ride, that's great!
