2008 VUE 3.5L
Default Ironing out various problems

New to me 08 Vue. Technically bought it for my younger sister in college, so trying to get it as reliable as possible within reason on cost for an older vehicle.

Car is an 08 XE 3.5L automatic AWD

Problems I'm dealing with or have dealt with

Bent hood shocks - replaced. Amazon half price of local.
Tires - had 3 different sizes on it so I put a set on.
Rear brake pads low - bought parts still have to install
Oil change - done
Transmission fluid change - bought Dex VI, need to get that done still
Rattle up front - sounds like shock or brake hardware. Need to find and fix
Steering wheel - leather all coming apart so I ordered one from eBay for $35
No heat in cabin - slight smell of coolant so possibly heater core. Hoping not.

Questions for those of you who may be interested enough to read and answer

Heating issue - in the event it is the heater core, can it be accessed from the engine bay? Looks to be an access plate and bolts, but all the threads I've searched say the entire dash must come out.

Rattle up front - anything common? I had an 08 Silverado that the brake hardware wore out on every 10k miles. This sounds a bit worse, but figured it'd be worth asking.

Motor/transmission - is this the Honda combo? I've seen conflicting info and the cap that calls for Dex VI on the transmission makes me think it is not as a Honda transmission would take different fluid.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

With the front end rattle I would suggest that it is eith a sway bar end link or lower control arm.
From what I have read on the heater core, my understanding replacement involves removing the dash and replacing from the inside of the vehicle.

Good luck!

Dash needs to be taken out to replace heater core. If you can do it, I suggest it. Any auto shop will cost you an arm and leg.

Yes, the dash must be removed.

You most likely have bad sway bar links. Bad ones often elude good mechanics during inspections.

Motor/transmission - is this the Honda combo? I've seen conflicting info and the cap that calls for Dex VI on the transmission makes me think it is not as a Honda transmission would take different fluid.

No the Honda engine/trans combo was only used in the Vue for 2004-2007 models. Your Vue uses a Chevrolet 3.5L/3500 V6 and GM's Hydra-Matic 4T45E transmission.
