Default holes in spare tire well

hey everyone, just discovered a oil leak under my trunk and realized one of my gallons of oil in my trunk must have been leaking out of these two holes under the spare tire

are these holes supposed to be here?

Yes & no.
Yes they're supposed to be there, no they're not supposed to be unplugged like that.

I don't know their intended purpose, I suspect it's either for air flow out the back of the car or water drainage.

I think they have as a rssult of maybe the press process during manufacture. They usually have a metal plug fitted. If you havern't got those, then just pop some duct tape over them on the inside of the well. That should stop things going out AND coming in.

My '96 SL, And my '97 SW both had leaky trunk/liftgate(s).......
Better to leak than rust through !

^Yes^ smear the duct tape with WindoWeld.
Those openings could be to locate the panels for the stamping press and the robot welders and to drain the electrified E-coat after the entire body assembly gets dipped.

The intended purpose is for when you need to clean the Spare wheel well so it can drain, must put them back in when done can cause some rust issues
