Default Valve Cover Gasket Replacement 2003 VUE

Hey everyone!

I've got a 2003 Vue V6. I've had a pretty consistent oil leak that seems to be getting worse. It's my fiance's car, and she has been saying that there is a strong smell of burning oil in the vehicle. Front side of the engine and areas below just look like they have gotten covered with oil over time. The guys at autozone said I need to replace the valve cover gaskets, which is entirely possible as it is well over 100K miles.

I wouldn't call myself a car person, but I've gotten tired of getting ripped off by mechanics in town and I'm saving up for a wedding, so I've started learning how to deal with this stuff on my own.

This is the first car I've ever worked on and I've already replaced an alternator, tensioner pulley, serpentine belt, and the thermostat (NIGHTMARE). I've been able to do all of this by finding awesome information here, so I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I already generally know what's involved to do the job, but I'm hoping someone might have some instructions / service manual info they could share with me so I can make sure I do it right.

Thanks in advance!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Huh? You had the intake raised to do the thermostat. You literally had your hand on the valve cover when you did the job. Why didn't you change the gaskets than? You know all the steps to lift the intake. Are you going to change the plugs too?

My T'stat went bad at about 96k mi., so I went ahead and did the Timing Belt, Water Pump, Acc. Belt/Tensioner and Plugs while the Intake was off. At the time, I didn't know those Cam Cover Gaskets were prone to start leaking after 100k. I was back taking the Intake off again 10k mi. later.

I did the gaskets August, 2016 and front exh manifold looks fairly dry/clean now. But not 100% dry. The front of motor is a mess and oil is leaking from something. I ordered a new oil canister o-ring and am going to try and clean motor somehow. What else might leak to make motor oil covered? Oil pan gasket?
