Ion blower motor swap
I replaced the blower motor on a customer's (06?) Chevy Aveo yesterday. That's a Daewoo, FWIW. It would only work if I "bumped" it - stiffly. I tore it apart today to see what makes it tick and was pleased to find it's a basic DC motor with an armature and brushes. This one comes apart easily enough - just several screws and nuts. I put the armature in my electric drill and polished the commutator with 1000 grit wet sandpaper. The brushes only looked half-worn, so I rubbed them a little and put it all back together. While I was doing so, I noticed that it felt very similar to the one I put it my Saturn Ion sedan 2 years ago. I think it was a 4 Seasons brand, but now that I'm looking at the RockAuto catalog, I'm thinking it was a TYC. I can't quite place it.
I pulled the blower motor out of my Ion today and compared the bolt hole placement between the two - and they matched up. I'm actually impressed with the Daewoo motor as it includes 3 sets of bolt holes. The best part is, the Daewoo motor has standard blade-type terminals that I mated with those blue quick-disconnects I had lying around. AND it has the + and - terminals labeled on the motor. It also has a nice rubber gasket on it (which my aftermarket part did not have).
On a side-note, the aftermarket motor I bought is labeled "Unimotor" and "Made in Canada". It humms loud enough to make me wonder why I bothered replacing my OE blower, which previously developed a loud humm. This Daewoo motor I put in is dead silent and it's hell, 11 years old now? I wonder if it'll last the week. At least it's quiet!
I did also tear apart my Unimotor blower, but I had to grind the endcap off to separate it. I'm not sure why it humms at this point. My theory is it has "crank walk." It humms with the blower cage on or off (I tried it in the car both ways).
