2004 ION-1 Sedan
Default Clicking when starting

hi ive got a 2004 saturn ion 1. ive had intermittent trouble with clicking when starting with full power. i recently purchased a new battery and an ignition switch,as ive heard this is a common problem. well after i replaced the battery and ignition switch the clicking when starting occurs everytime when the weather is cold and will not start but when i hook up my battery charger and set it to quick start the car starts immediately and when it gets warm in the vehicle the car will start no problem but once it gets cold from sitting overnight the vehicle returns to clicking. im at wits end is there a solution to this or a bypass to this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. i live in iowa so id like to solve this problem thank you

There may be several issues to address before getting to an answer. A trunk mounted battery may present battery power issues with longer power cable than normal (red). Be sure battery positive and negative cables are clean and free of corrosion. Battery negative counts on several ground connections to connect battery negative to the engine and chassis. On the engine bay, battery positive (red) is connected to the Remote Start Terminal next to the engine fuse panel with a long post to allow connecting a jumper cable for jump starting. Check this stud for looseness as this battery cable connection feeds power to the main fuse panel and another cable goes to the starter. One member found this stud loose and the source of starting/power problems.

Another area of concern is car mileage. What's mileage as this may have some bearing on whether or not the starter is worn out. A simple starter test requiring crawling under the car and sorting out two terminals on the starter can help determine if the starter is worn out compared to starting circuit problems.

I'm hesitant for the following suggestion because of your situation requiring testing the starter on the same conditions you described and in cold temps. To isolate a starter problem (worn out after years or reliable use) can be done in several ways but results are the same; using any screwdriver to act as a switch, shorting the large terminal with battery cable on the starter and smaller terminal on the starter bypasses all circuitry and simply applies battery power to the starter solenoid to power it up. This requires jacking the car up to crawl under it, ensuring ignition is off, parking brake applied and shifter in Park position. If hesitant, wiring a (momentary) remote starter switch with two alligator clips to connect to the starter terminals also works and keeps you safely away from under the car when testing the starter. The starter should power up immediately and turn over the engine. This presumes battery and connections are good. Good starters will power up immediately while worn ones may or click repeatedly or do nothing.
