Default 1994 sl1 5 speed STUCK IN REVERSE :(

So, I went for a short drive(about a mile round trip) last night without letting my car warm up (i was in a hurry) temps were in the single digit negatives. Got back to my house and parked I put it in reverse backed up into my spot went to take it out of reverse and its stuck in reverse. The shifter moves back and forth not really much side to side but doesn't come out of reverse. Any suggestions?

I'd suggest looking at the shifter cable. Both at the shifter and on the transmission. The cable end probably fell off or busted.

Do not try forcing it as things bend or break. Inspect carefully and report what you find. This is not hard to fix no matter what fell apart as long as it has not been forced.

This is the culprit. Thank you! What would be the best fix? Should I replace anything else while I'm replacing this?

Immediate fix is a couple tie wraps to hold the link on the ball. Then you replace the bushing with a permanent fix.
The plastic or steel one works. This is the only approved seller so you can find copies but good luck with the quality. https://www.ebay.com/sch/saturnbushi...88.m1543.l2654 I would recommend the steel bushing replacement but it MUST be installed correctly per the instructions.

Temporary fix option

As you can see, this "temporary" fix has held up quite well. I got the delrin bushing, but this is on so snug it's not worth destroying to put the other on. It's just an option, and I always saw it mentioned as temporary.

I didn't like the idea of zip ties or anything that would abuse the loop end any more than needed. I did slightly trim the bushing so it fit all the way on the ball better, but other than that just popped it on.

Don't abuse the cable end, as the same seller that sells the bushings sells the cable end fixes for a reason.

Your Shifter Bushing is broken. From your picture- done and repaired this so many times; more then I can think.

The link that OldNuc points to- is the way to go.

Jerry Borschard (Saturn Bushing Man) was on this very forum many years ago and designed the replacements. I have used both in my cars over the years. I went with the Stainless Bushing replacement and even went a step further with JB Weld and the E-Clip. As a side note, be very careful with the E-Clip replacement. Harbor Freight sells an E-Clip assortment; if by chance, your replacement E-Clip flings off when you are replacing it with a pair of pliers... been there done that.

This is a fairly easy repair, but seriously- take your time when making this repair work.
