Default LW200 Timing Chain Tensioner and Upgrade???

Going to be replacing the valve cover gasket on my 02 LW200. Slight leak from all its down time as it only has 55,000 miles. Also wanting to give the timing chain and guide an inspection as it looks like the PO neglected oil changes by my standards.

Looks as if there was an update to the tensioner in 2010. Planing to put that in for $35. Any perils or pitfalls to be aware of? Also my 02 was produced on 09/01 how can I find out if it has the “upgraded” timing components that went in during 02-03?

Would you recommend anything else be done while I have the valve cover off? Thanks in advance, you guys have been a great help to me with my “new” car.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I've not replaced my timing chain tensioner, but the manuals share warnings regarding its installation. If you'd like to see that information, please send a p/m with an email address and I will send it to you.

You may not be able to know this. Go to GM.com and contact customer service to determine whether or not any update of the timing system was performed according to their records.

No. You may want to take a look at the spark plug boots and coiled wire contacts between the spark plugs and the coil packs. If you see any cracks replace the worn item, or items.

Thank you again for your time. From prior posts here I had the feeling the tensioner upgrade was not compatible. Good to have confirmation that it’s not.

I’ve been to the GM site once for recall info but did not get a straight forward answer on prior recall work. I’ll try again.

From the fluids changed when I bought the car it looks as if oil changes were not done as frequently as I would have. I have ran several short OCI’s with BG EPR engine flush. Finally the oil isn’t looking dirty 300 miles after a fresh fill. I’m going to do an Auto RX treatment then switch over Mobil 1 extended performance.

I can only hope to put the mileage on that you have with no drive train repairs. Thanks again for your time.

The early engines have a restricted nozzle that lubes the main chain. Proper oil changes and the cars run for many miles. If your nozzle is still flowing well you should not have any problems. I bought a 2002 that had a plugged nozzle and a broken chain at 130k miles. I repaired this engine with the upgraded Cloyes timing components and have put 12k miles on it. Just an fyi it is all about oil changes.
