Default 2002 SL1 misfires - no codes showing

My daughter's car engine( 1.9 SOHC ) started missing a few days ago - I replaced the spark plugs and ign wires and both ign coils , but still misfiring. The service engine soon light did not come on - the scanner shows only ending code U 1300 multiple engine misfires. Engine starts fine and idles fine - even after I disconnected the upstream oxygen sensor in exh manifold - no ses light and no codes. Also disconnected the MAP sensor and started the engine - again no ses light and no codes. Do I need a replacement powertrain control module ? Any suggestions ? Thanks . - Dave.

There are many possibilities, including PCM, but PCM is probably the least likely.

Check compression.

Check fuel pressure, preferably some FP checks while driving. Can you feel/hear the misfires? If so, then that would be the prime time to be observing the FP.

As a guess, I suspect the CKP (CranKshaft Position) sensor. I'm not fond of "throwing parts at a problem", but if this one is as intermittent or almost-hidden as you describe, then that may be the only practical approach, some parts-swapping... and I would start with the CKP sensor. Check for obvious wire problems, like damaged wire, corrosion on connectors, or loose connectors before replacing any sensor, of course.

3rd gen SOHC - have you checked for a leaking intake manifold gasket?

If your scanner says U1300 is for engine misfires you need to throw that useless POS scanner out, it's doing more harm than good.

Hi,
After several tests with a GM scanner , a code showing engine running rich finally appeared. Another test was done by removing the primary oxygen sensor from the exhaust manifold , and installing a fitting and hose connected to a pressure gauge to check back pressure in exhaust system. The test showed over 7 psi - which indicated a plugged exhaust system . Further checking showed material from primary cat converter ended up plugging the secondary cat converter. Secondary converter was rep[laced and engine works now.
Thanks for the great forum for Saturn users. - Dave .
