Debris in oilpan. What is it?
2.2 Ecotec Ion rebuild.
So far so good with the inframe rebuild.
Head stripped, cleaned, and checked. Getting ready for a valve job for what its worth polished the chambers. I removed the pistons, cleaned, baked, high temp ceramic coated the crowns, phosphate dryfilm coated the skirts. New Mahle standard rings gap at the middle of specs bores needed very little correction just a quick pass with a hone. rod bearings were good, journals look good, crank play is in spec. So far, the rebuild has been unremarkable
I removed the oil pan to reinstall the pistons and I opted to remove the windage tray and clean the oil pan and inspect the oil pickup tube, at this point I found the remains of what appears to be old timing chain guides, this along with other minor damage indicates timing chain failure at some point.
I found pieces of some kind of ring stuck under the oil pickup.
It measures about 1/8 inch thick and about 1 1/4 inch in diameter and almost fits the diameter of the snout on the main pulley and inside the the oil pump gear. one piece was blackish blue so it got very hot before failing.
Looking around inside the crank case Im not finding any signs of parts that failed under force so this has me puzzled.

I have no idea what part it is that you've found in the oil pan. I am curious, however, to know if you're replacing the main and rod bearings with standard or oversize bearings.
