2006 ION-3 Sedan
Default 2006 Ion 3, 2.2L

I've seen some videos on YouTube, but those are really LOUD clicks. My are annoying but are much less, well, violent. It starts when I start the engine, and continues for about two minutes, until warm. Then it slowly fades away. It's noticeable when idling initially. Then, when in Drive, it is only obvious when I accelerate. If I put the car in Neutral and hit the gas, it doesn't occur when it's just a little warm.

My theories - Busted engine mount lifting motor from exhaust flange?
Exhaust leak - perhaps in exhaust manifold?
Noisy lifters (!)?

I think it's exhaust. Anyone else with an idea?

I don't have a video. I watched other videos. They all seem wrong.

Increasingly, I'm also getting a thumpthumpthump sounds whenever I let OFF the gas when the engine is warm.

Determined the 2nd sound was a bad front right shock. THAT fixed a lot of little issues. Still don't know about the clicking when cold.

Find a large empty parking lot and make sharp figure eights both at slow creeping speeds as well as while slightly accelerating. Clicking indicates possibly an outer CV joint. Noise left turn, left side, left outer joint, and vise versa the joint can be bad even if there is no play If your lucky they can clean and repack the joint with the proper grease.
Check that its not a loose wheel, rust between the rotor and hub. If the strut mount is going it will also make a popping / springing noise and the vehicle might pull. I also always check the rubber bushings and mounts including engine mounts, swaybar bushings & links as sound will travel through other components.
