Default Will 1996 AC clutch fit 2002 AC compressor?

I know ac clutches may have different connectors but physically are they the same?

Will a 1996 ac clutch fit a 2002 compressor?

Thanks
Tom

I checked 2 sourcess, and both provide different part numbers for the AC clutch for those 2 years.

Its anyone's guess whether or not parts swapping will work. Best case scenario are the two compressor are the exact same model with the exact same dimensions for ac fittings, wiring, and clutch parts. Even clutch parts change on the same compressor. Worse case scenario are two different models from the same manufacturer or not the same manufacturer. Worse case scenario at best may require trial and error fitting and checking dimensions for interchangeability. No one has specs for these dimensions unless having access to factory engineering drawings or rebuilders that may have inside info for parts interchangeability.

So apparently from checking out other websites with the part number that all the ac clutches will mount and just the plug should be different...can anyone else confirm this?

Had to pick a '98 SC2 to get all _4_ clutch design options (numbered in same order top to bottom they showed up on the parts diagram page):
1)'91-'96 https://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.c.../19190320.html
2)'91-'95 (compressor has high temp sensor, not interchangeable) https://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.c.../21031318.html
3)'99-'02 https://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.c.../21031321.html
4)'98-'99 (requires 3rd design compressor with indent for clutch connector) https://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.c.../21031256.html

Guess '97's are S.O.L. if the A/C clutch goes bad lol

So will a 96 fit a 2002?

Got any Saturn junk yards around where you can locate a 96 & 02 and see?

I have a 96 in my hands but do not want to attempt swapping if it doesn't work...The mount looks identical but not sure if clearance is an issue with the 2002.

Go and physically compare, OR just purchase NEW what you need for 2002.

You list both a 96 & an 02 under your signature bar; so is it safe to presume that you no longer have access to both for comparison's sake?

I do have both cars and a spare 96 ac compressor. I just didn't want to take apart the 2002 until I had the right parts but was hoping the 96 would do the trick. So it might work unless physically there is a clearance issue...the mounting holes and tab look identical.

Based on your presumption of a faulty clutch or coil on your '02, may I ask what you did to verify this?

4 designs of the clutch, 2 look identical and could be interchangeable but going by the official part numbers (which I posted before along with the years they interchange) they are not:

Most of the people in the past to figure this sort of thing out were happier to remove A/C all together and have increased performance from reduced weight (or more room for a turbocharger).

With AC on voltage is being applied to clutch plug but there is no engagement. Compressor turns.

Compressor turns by belt movement, but no clutch engagement?
Are you sure there is R134a in the system....y'all might be too low for the system to turn on?
And what is the ambient temperature up in Toronto when you are attempting to have the AC function? Your temps are dropping kinda low for the AC to work, no?

Need to measure the clutch coil resistance. Remove power connector and measure resistance between power supply pin in clutch connector and the compressor body.
