One of my son's owned a 2001 with the 2.2L engine.
It had tremendous power for a car its size.
I found it's seats very comfortable.

Unfortunately these low mileage cars don't last long, the AD you referenced seems to show SOLD. no?

Get a Corolla or a Civic or a late 90's to early 2000's Camry or Accord. Don't waste your time and money otherwise. These cars are dependable (as much or more so than any Saturn), cheap and plentiful. Staying with 4 cylinder versions you'll have pretty much the same simplicity as the Saturn too.

They are still out there, just hard to find. For example

(and I know I've seen a few other low mile S series recently)

UT, so rust is less of an issue. I had a '96 Pontiac Sunfire (mechanical double for cavalier), 5 spd manual, was OK. Things I did not like about the car:
1) could not break ~30mpg
2) developed a sticky (?) shifter bearing or cable, would catch while I was trying to hit 2nd gear so I had to wiggle, etc
3) no low fuel warning light

Not sure your fascination with those cars but sadly they are pretty much turds in the pool. But hey to each their own I guess. Better those than a Ford, or a Chrysler "Cloud car" (Cirrus, Nimbus or whatever they are).

That made sense for a while, for new cars.

But used cars, 100% of your money stays in the US, going to the previous owner.

And . . . my Chrysler minivans were manufactured at a plant in Canada, while my Ford ZX2 was heche in mehico

Well I dont have a problem with american cars, all the cars I have so far been american, Toyotas are too expensive and is hard to find one with low miles, the Cavalier is not at the same level as a a Saturn but is close enough for me.

Cavaliers are solidly mediocre, but always were reliable -- we had a 2000 LS in the family until about 2010. Got about 180K mostly trouble free miles out of it before getting hit by a car, fixing, hitting and elk, fixing and selling.

The Volvos are safe, quiet, nice, comfortable, and pretty affordable. I get out of it after a long drive without thinking about how I wish I hadn't been in the car so long. I drive one of California's most dangerous highways weekly, so I wanted something a bit more solid should someone try to take me out.

My Saturn(s) were great cars, and I still have the 98 in the family. It sure was loud in the cabin at 75mph though! My ears would be slightly ringing after a 10 hour drive.

I know you hate those too, though.

^^ I have no direct experience with Volvo, however 2 close friends have had 3 between them and tell me Volvo parts (even at FLAPS) are much more expensive than a regular GM car.
Just for curiosity's sake, I used both a 2005 Cavalier and a 2005 Volvo S40 without turbo in my local Autozone site. The Volvo ft brake caliper was ~ $80 whereas the Cavalier was $20. Isolated case, but .. ..

I get all my parts from Rockauto, Pelican, or eEuroparts, and I've found most things to be pretty close, with the more specialized parts being more pricey.

The main issue with price discrepancy is that many of the parts are made in Europe. I've found components on both my volvo and my Mercedes to be about 2x the cost on average, but much higher quality, and they are often rebuildable.

And for a DIY guy, an extra 100 bucks a year in parts is not a huge issue. Hopefully I can not replace things as often.

Many Volvo chassis parts are shared with Mazdas.

It really is what you're going for. I wanted something safe and quiet. It costs a little more, but that's life.

There is a 2004 s40 turbo Volvo with only 42000 miles for around $5500, what do you think about that model ? does it have a timing chain or belt ?

The 2004s are a split model year, if I recall correctly.

I have one that is similar to the 2004.5, and the 2.5L turbo really moves.

I got mine for $7k with 57,000 miles on it. I'd say 5.5k is pretty good if it't the newer car...
